TASK 1

Writing Task 1 should be at least 150 words.


TYPES
There are 7 types that can show up in IETLS Writing Task 1.
TENSES
In IELTS Writing Task 1, we often use 3 tenses:
- Simple Present (Introduction, Overview, Process graph)
- Simple Past
- Simple Future (predict, forecast, project, etc)
*Note: We can still use other tenses but keep in mind the correct usage of each tense.

FORMAT
For graphs, the format is as follows:
1. Introduction (Paraphrase)
2. Overview (the overall trend)
3. Details (1 or 2 paragraphs)

For process diagrams, the format is as follows:


1. Introduction (Paraphrase)
2. Overview (the start/end of the process)
3. Details (List out the steps, 1 or 2 paragraphs)

For maps, the format is as follows:


1. Introduction (Paraphrase)
2. Overview (the biggest change)
3. Details (List out the changes, 1 or 2 paragraphs)

BRAINSTORM
1. The bar chart below shows the figures for imprisonment in thousands in five
countries between 1930 and 1980.
2. Percentage of national consumer expenditure by category – 2002.

3. The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over
between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.
4. The two maps below show an island, before and after the construction of
some tourist facilities. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting
the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
5. The graph below shows the expenditure incurred in printing a magazine.

6. The diagram below shows the process of brick manufacture.


7. The graphs show figures relating to hours worked and stress levels
amongst professionals in eight groups. Describe the information shown to a
university or college lecturer.
