Standards Committee and endorsed by the Board of the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of
Malaysia (SIRIM) was published under the authority of the SIRIM Board in 1995.
SIRIM wishes to draw attention to the fact that this Malaysian Standard does not purport to include all
the necessary provisions of a contract.
The Malaysian Standards are subject to periodical review to keep abreast of progress in the industries
concerned. Suggestions for improvements will be recorded and in due course brought to the notice of
the Committees charged with the revision of the standards to which they refer.

FOREWORD
This Malaysian Standard was prepared by the Working Group on Paints and Varnishes under the
authority of the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry Standards Committee. It is the second revision
of the MS 125 : 1985 (First revision)
(1) Air drying alkyd resin was specified instead of long oil alkyd resin so as not to restrict the use of
other types of alkyd resins such as medium oil.
(2) The use of pigments with extenders was allowed due to the availability of good quality
extenders in the market today.
Licensed to JS LIM ARCHITECT / Downloaded on : 13-Sep-2013 12:04:01 PM / Single user license only, copying and networking prohibited
(3) The type of vehicle specified i.e. 20% to 25% phthalic anhydride content oil modified alkyd resin,
was replaced with the term `air drying alkyd resin', in order to allow the use of other suitable or
superior types of vehicles.
(4) Test method for gloss was replaced with MS 133 : Pt. D5 since MS 133 : Pt. D2 has been found to
be obsolete.
(5) For purposes of testing gloss and drying times, some practical instructions were included
under Table 1.

1. Scope
1.1 This Malaysian Standard specifies an air-drying gloss paint for use on primed interior and
exterior wood and metal surfaces and for recoating of previously painted surfaces,

finishing coat on interior/exterior surfaces which are suitably prepared. The paint shall be
suitable for application by brushing, spraying or roller-coating when used as
recommended by the manufacturer.
2.2 When used in accordance with the manufacturer's directions the paints shall not have any
deleterious effects on the user.

Pigments shall be of a pure type, and have good colour permanence. The white pigment
shall be chalk-resisting titanium dioxide of the rutile type complying with MS 12*. Zinc
oxide may be used up to a maximum of 10% by mass of the total pigment.

manufacturer.
++ For the testing of gloss and drying times, the substrate shall be glass panel. The paint shall be applied by using a block
applicator with a gap size of 100 µm. For checking of gloss, the gloss reading shall be taken after the paint has been left to dry
for 18h at 27 ± 2°C.

The paint shall not show excessive settling in a freshly opened can containing the
specified quantity, that is it shall be easily redispersed by simple stirring with a spatula to a
smooth homogeneous state. The paint shall show no curdling, livering, caking or colour
separation and shall be free from lump, skin-pieces and foreign matter.
4.2.2 Colour
The colour of the paint specified in the contract or order shall match that of the standard

properties and shall not exhibit undue pull under the brush.
4.2.3.2 Spraying
When applied by spraying it shall show good spraying and lapping properties.
4.2.3.3 Roller-coating
When applied by roller-coating, it shall show good levelling and lapping properties.
4.2.3.4 Finish
The paint when applied at a spreading rate of 13 sq metres per litre on a smooth
burnished steel panel shall dry to a smooth, uniform film free from running, sagging,
streaking or wrinkling.
When tested as in 5.2.1 the paint shall show no cracking or flaking. It shall remain firmly
adherent to the panel and no peeling off is to be observed.
4.2.5 Resistance to natural weathering. When the paint film is prepared and tested as
prescribed in 5.2.2 it shall comply with the following requirements:
(a) There shall be no signs of chalking, flaking or blistering and the surface
shall be in a satisfactory condition for repainting.

MS 125 : 1995
(b) The film shall, having due regard to its other properties and the
particular colour concerned, show good colour retention and resistance to chalking
and discoloration.
(c) The loss in gloss shall be not more than 15% of the original gloss.
4.2.6 Resistance to accelerated weathering. In lieu of the natural weathering test, accelerated
weathering test as prescribed in 5.2.3 may be performed as a more expedient method.
However, in case of any dispute, the natural weathering test shall be the referee method.
The paint film shall comply with the requirements of 4.2.5.
The paint when stored at normal room temperature in the original tightly closed container

applicable test methods indicated in table 1 and as specified in the relevant clauses.
Apply a coat of paint by brushing on a tinplate panel giving a dry film thickness of 25 µm to
35 µm. Alow the coated panel to dry at normal drying conditions in a horizontal position
for 168 h. Bend the panel over a 3 mm mandrel using the type 1 apparatus specified in
MS 133 : Pt. E1** at a temperature of 27 ± 2°C. Examine the film over the area of the
bend in a strong light at a 5 times magnification for compliance with 4.2.4.
Apply a coat of the paint under test by brushing on a primed and undercoated mild steel
panel to give a wet film thickness of approximately 50 µm. Allow to dry at normal drying
conditions for 24 h. Apply a second coat of the paint in the same manner. Allow the panel
to age for 168 h at room temperature. Expose the panel to natural weathering in
accordance with MS 133 : Pt. F6+ for a period of 6 months on a 45° angle exposure rack
facing south at an approved exposure site. Examine the exposed coated panel for
compliance with 4.2.5.

The Standard and Industrial research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) is established with the merger of the
Standards Institution of Malaysia (SIM) and the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research (NISIR)
under the Laws of Malaysia Act 157 on 16th. September 1975: Standards and Industrial Research Institute of
Malaysia (Incorporation) Act 1975. The Institute is vested with the power to provide for the promotion and
undertaking of industrial research and for the preparation and promotion of standards for commodities,
processes, practices and services; and to provide for matters incidental to or connected with those purposes.
One of the functions of the Institute is to prepare Malaysian Standards in the form of specifications for materials
and products, methods of testing, codes of sound and safe practice, nomenclature, etc. Malaysian Standards are
prepared by representative committees which co-ordinate manufacturing capacity and production efficiency with
the user’s reasonable needs. They seek to achieve fitness for purpose, simplified production and distribution
replacement interchangeability, and adequate variety of choice without wasteful diversify.
Malaysian Standards are prepared only after a full enquiry has shown that the project is endorsed as a desirable
one and worth the effort involved. The work is based on voluntary agreement, and recognition of the community
of interest of producer and consumer. The use of Malaysian Standards is voluntary except in so far as they are
made mandatory by statutory authorities by means of regulations, federal and local by-laws or any other similar
ways.
The Institute operates entirely on a non-profits basis. It is a grant aided body receiving financial aid from the
Government, funds from membership subscriptions and proceeds from sales of Standards and other
publications, fees and licence fees for the use of SIRIM Certification Mark and other activities associated with
Standardization, Industrial Research and Consultancy Services.
