corrosion.
3.1 The agreed reference sample shall be a sample complying in all respects with the
requirements of this specification and agreed between the purchaser and the vendor. The agreed
reference sample shall consist of at least one l (approximately one quart).
4. Composition
4.1 Pigments
The pigment shall consist of zinc chromate complying with MS ..........*. The zinc chromate pigment
content of the total pigment (expressed as CrO3) shall not be less than 16 per cent by mass (this is
equivalent to approximately 40 per cent zinc chrome pigment). The extender pigments such as
asbestine, china clay, whiting, etc. shall comply with MS......** where appropriate. In addition, the
extender pigments shall not contain more than 0.5% (m/m) of water solubles when tested in
accordance with MS ......**. The addition of opacifying pigments such as titanium dioxide or lithopone
and/or suitable colour pigments in the case of tinted primer is permissable.
4.2 Vehicle
The non-volatile vehicle shall consist essentially of an oil modified alkyd resin of suitable oil length or
suitable oleoresinous varnish with a drying oil to resin ration of not less than 3:1.
* Pending the issue of this Malaysian Standard, BS 389 Type 2 or its equivalent may be used.
** Pending the issue of this Malaysian Standard, BS 1795 or its equivalent may be used.
1
MS 272 : 1975
The vehicle shall be free from rosin and rosin derivatives when tested in accordance with MS......*.
Rosin modified phenolic resins/alkyd where appropriate may, however, be used.
The addition of up to 30% by mass maximum of the total non-volatile vehicle of drying oils or treated
drying oils complying with MS..........* is permissable.
5. Requirements
The paint shall not show excessive settling in a freshly opened can containing the specified quantity

and shall be redispersed by simple stirring with a spatula to a smooth homogeneous state. The paint
shall be free from lumps, skin pieces and other foreign matter.
The paint when stored at normal room temperature in the original sealed container shall retain the
properties in this specification for a period of not less than six months from the date of delivery.
5.3 Colour
The paint shall have a yellow colour characteristic of zinc chromate pigment or any other colour
subject to agreement between the purchaser and vendor.
5.4 Consistency
The paint shall be of a good brushing consistency when applied onto a vertical smooth burnished
steel surface at a spreading rate of approximately 13 sq metres per l (72 sq yards per Imperial
Gallon) and the film shall not show any tendency to run or sag.
The paint when tested in the manner prescribed in MS 133 : Pt. C2 : 1973 and MS 133 : Pt. C3 : 1973
shall become surface dry in not more than 4 hours, and hard dry in not more than 16 hours. By the
term 'hard dry' is understood such a condition that a second coat can be satisfactorily applied by
brush.
The fineness of grind of the paint as determined by the Hegman gauge according to MS 133 : Pt C6
:1973 shall be a minimum of 4 (50 microns max.).
* Pending the issue of this Malaysian Standard, BS 242, 243 and 259, 632 or its equivalent may be used.

5.8.2 Brushing
The paint when applied by brush at a spreading rate of approximately 13 sq metres per l (72 sq yards
per imperial gallon) to a smooth, burnished steel panel shall dry to a smooth, matt or egg shell gloss
film, free from sagging, wrinkling and excessive brush marks.
5.8.3 Spraying
When the paint film at 25 - 35 microns dry film thickness on a tin plate panel is tested at 27°C ± 2°C,
seven days (168 hours) after application, by bending over a mandrel of 6 mm (1/4 inch) diameter, the
film shall show no cracks when examined in a strong light at 5-diameter magnification and shall
remain firmly adherent to the test panel.
When the dried paint film of 25-35 microns on cold-rolled steel of 18 BG is tested with continuous salt
spray test for a period of 96 hours commencing seven days after application, it shall show no sign of
breakdown and/or rusting and shall protect the metal surface against corrosion. In these respects it
shall not be inferior to a film prepared from an agreed reference sample and tested in the same way.
When the paint film of 25-35 microns on cold-rolled steel 1.25 mm thick (18 BG) is tested in
accordance with MS 133 : Pt. F2 : 1973 at 42°C - 48°C for a period of 240 hours, commencing 7 days
after application, it shall show no sign of breakdown and shall protect the metal surface against
corrosion. In these respects it shall not be inferior to a film prepared from the agreed reference
sample and tested in the same way.
