Why do biologists care about phylogenies?

Phylogenetics is important because it enriches our

understanding of how genes, genomes, species (and
molecular sequences more generally) evolve. They care
about it because it plays a central role in biology by
providing the means for characterizing the organisms that
we study. Through the production of classifications that
reflect evolutionary relationships it also allows predictions
and testable hypotheses.
Determining the relationships between different
organisms allows their evolution to be contextualised and
properly understood. Some defenders of pre-cladistic
classifications incorrectly claim phylogeny doesn’t put
enough emphasis on morphological
similarities/differences, though the purpose of phylogeny
is exactly to explain how those characteristics came to be.
