1- Define the following terms:

a. Photon
b. electronvolt
c. Photoelectric effect
d. Threshold frequency
e. Work function

2- Calculate the energy of the proton of a frequency 1.0 x 1026 Hz.

3- A light-emitting diode (LED) emits light of wavelength 750 nm. The radiant power of the
light from the LED is 50 mW. Calculate the rate at which photons are emitted from this
LED.
4- Calculate the following :

c. the energy of a photon with a wavelength of 4.0 × 10−7 m.

d . the momentum of a photon with a wavelength of 4.0 × 10−7 m.

5- Visible light has wavelength of 450 nm and 750 nm. Calculate the energy of the photon
for each wavelength.
6- The photo-electric effect provides evidence for the particulate nature of electromagnetic
radiation. State three experimental observations that support this conclusion.
7- Two beams of monochromatic light have similar intensities. The light in one beam has
wavelength 350nm and the light in the other beam has wavelength 700nm.
The two beams are incident separately on three different metal surfaces. The work
function of each of these surfaces is shown in the table
State quantitatively which combination, if any, of the monochromatic light and metal
surface could give a photo-electric emission.
8- The work function of a metal surface is 3.5 eV. Light of wavelength 450 nm is incident on
the surface. Determine whether electrons will be emitted by the photoelectric effect from
the surface
9- Photons with energy 1.20 × 10−18 J are incident on a metal surface. The maximum
energy of electrons emitted from the surface is 5.0 × 10−19 J. Calculate the work
function of the metal.

10- Radiation of wavelength 3.0 × 10−7 m falls on a sodium surface. Sodium has a work
function of 3.6 × 10−19 J. Calculate the maximum kinetic energy of the electrons emitted.
11- In a photoelectric experiment, electrons of maximum kinetic energy 1.5 × 10−19 J are
emitted from a metal surface of work function 3.2 × 10−19 J. Calculate the frequency of
the incident radiation
12- Electromagnetic radiation of frequency is incident on a metal surface. The variation
with frequency f of the maximum kinetic energy of electron emitted from the surface is
shown in the graph, use the graph to determine the work function energy of the metal
surface
