Summary: Offshoring-Outsourcing and Onshoring Tradeoffs: The Impact of
Coronavirus on Global Supply Chain
The journal is written by George William Kajjumba, Oluka Pross Nagitta,Faisal A. Osra and
Marcia Mkansi. and about the impact of COVID- 19 on global supply chain and how the process
of offshoring- outsourcing, companies and nations have become interdependent in their efforts to
bring the supply chain network.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, several sectors have been impacted in outsourcing and
offshoring. The large impact of COVID-19 is, it effect on pharmaceutical development and the
distribution of medical service in the first quarter of 2020 (the COVID-19 pandemic) was
minimal. However, essential products such as medicines, PPE and masks began to be delivered
in short supply. Health services have been overworked since the coronavirus virus (COVID-19)
pandemic has progressed. The market for vital medical products like PPE, masks and medicines
which have been outsourced or offshored, is high in demand. In order to meet this new demand,
an increase in PPE and masks production would necessarily involve a large increase in PPE and
masks manufacturing. Outsourcing homemade masks, which may include bandanas, is also
another alternative. Also ventilators were the most in demand during the pandemic. Fabrication,
material handling, modeling, and software coding are among the skills required to manufacture a
single medical ventilator, and those skills are difficult to find in a single onshore organization.
As a result, outsourcing/offshoring certain parts and expertise is the only feasible choice for
improving production and meeting the much-needed demand. Similarly, only a few countries
will be able to adapt to the invention of a vaccine because vaccine manufacturing processes
impose such conditions on the supply chain, such as innovative expertise, careful maintenance,
production facilities, and ultra-cold chain storage and shipping processes. Because of these strict
requirements, many nations have chosen to outsource the operation to leading international
organizations.
Despite of medical crisis, the other business has impacted negatively on many offshored firms
with operations in countries such as India, China, Singapore, and Vietnam. Companies have been
unable to deliver products since the worldwide lockdown began in March, as employees have
been forced to remain at home. In the one hand, countries that offer outsourcing and offshoring
facilities are unable to meet their goals due to the lockdown, which has the effect of driving
multinationals out of their countries and into bankruptcy. As a result, many countries are divided
between supporting their livelihood and having multinationals in their countries.
Besides that, air pollution is expected to worsen if countries practice onshore, especially in
countries that rely on nonrenewable resources. Also carbon dioxide is one of the leading sources
of global warming and climate change, owing mostly to onshoring. This would be prohibited by
offshoring-outsourcing, which is a safer option.
We can make the conclusion that, Outsourcing and offshoring have played a crucial role in the
growth of global economies and are the pillars of the global trade.
