Class #1: Course Math 10C
Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

General Outcome: Develop spatial sense and proportional reasoning.

SLO:  Develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that
involve right triangles. [C, CN, PS, R, T, V]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Set up a triangle
2. Draw sets of similar triangles
3. Prove that triangles are similar
4. Solve problems using Pythagorean theorem
5.

● Notes packet
● Calculators

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time

● How to set up your triangles

● Does anyone remember how to set up triangles?
● Angles are always labeled with upper case letters (A,B,C, etc) and sides are always 5 min
lower case (a, b, c, etc.). The angles and sides are always opposite each other
● Draw a triangle and label it.

Body Time
Similar Triangles 1) Does anyone remember what similar triangles are?
2) Similar triangles have:
- equal measures of matching angles
- Equal ratios of matching sides
3) Draw a set up similar triangles and prove that they are 10 min
similar using either matching angles or matching side
ratios
4)

Pythagorean 1) What is the Pythagorean theorem? 10 min

2

Theorem 2) c2 = a2 +b2
3) the only side that truly needs to be identified is side c or
the hypotenuse
4) Which side is the hypotenuse? How can you tell?

Labelling 1) Label the triangle and solve based on the following

measurements:
2) When we get into trigonometry, we need a way to
identify which side is being talked about. To do this we
always label the sides according to the angle that is
being discussed.
3) The hypotenuse is always the side opposite the right 15 min
angle. We call the side opposite the angle being
discussed the opposite (naturally). Once the hypotenuse
and opposite side are labeled, we call the last side the
adjacent.

Conclusion Time

● Show triangles and have them label triangles.
Ex. What side is the hypotenuse?
15 mins
If this (show on board) is the angle we are trying to find (or the discussed
angle), what side would be the opposite? What would be the adjacent?

Assessment
● Formative: setting up triangles, drawing similar triangles, Pythagorean theorem, labeling
triangles
