Learning Outcomes
What relevant goals will this unit address?
(include all relevant GLO(s) & SLO(s))

Goals: Students can use trigonometry to enrich their mind and expand their thinking, but more practically trigonometry can be used in surveying,
engineering problems, heights of buildings or trees, stock market trends, or maybe business cycles.

General Outcome: Develop spatial sense and proportional reasoning.

SLO: Develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that involve right triangles. [C, CN, PS, R, T, V]

# Lesson Title Lesson Activities

Outcome(s):
Develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that involve right triangles.

Overview: In this first lesson we will be reviewing some of the material learned in grade 9. This will help me to understand
where my students are currently at and what needs to be gone over better in order to succeed in this unit. After which we will go
into the tangent ratio.

Teaching and/or Learning Strategies:

● Hand out note packets for the unit.
The Tangent ● access prior knowledge by having students go over setting up triangles, similar triangles, and the pythagorean theorem
1
Ratio ● Show a leaning tower of Pisa photo and ask...If you were to drop an object from the top of the Leaning Tower of
Pisa how far away from the base would it land?
● Discuss the Leaning Tower of Pisa problem including what information they need to begin and what mathematical
properties are capable of solving such a problem.
● Go over triangles and labelling
● Discuss similar triangles
● Pythagorean Theorem and examples

Notes:

Resources: note packet, calculators

2
Con’t ● Define the tangent ratio
● Discuss how to manipulate the formula to solve for unknown sides or angles. (to solve for an angle, we use the tan -1
feature on your calculator (2nd tan)
● Examples on finding the tangent ratio and the angle
● Examples on finding missing sides and angles (solving the triangle)

Outcome(s):
Develop and apply the primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) to solve problems that involve right triangles.

Overview: Students will get to apply the lessons taught thus far in a game with whiteboards. Or if I feel students have caught on
quickly, a quiz will be done this day.

Teaching and/or Learning Strategies:

● Each student has a white board.
