Class #1: Trigonometry Course Math 20-2
Title/Focus

PROGRAM OF STUDY OUTCOMES

General Outcome: Develop spatial sense.
 SLO:  Solve problems that involve the cosine law and the sine law, excluding the ambiguous case.
[CN, PS, R]

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Solve problems involving review of the three trigonometric ratios
2.
3.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
 Notes packet
 Lesson plan
 Notes powerpoint
 Calculator

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS

PROCEDURE
Introduction Time
 Recall in math 10 when we used trigonometry, we used 3 trig ratios to find
different angles and side lengths of “right triangles”
 Recall what the definitions of the three primary trigonometric ratios are: 10 min

Body Time
Topic 1) Fill in the three primary trigonometric ratios
2) Build the above ratios with the given triangle from angle
A 10 min
3)

Topic 1) Example: Chris places a ladder against the side of the

house so that the top of the ladder makes an angle of
52* with the side of the house. The bottom of the
ladder is 1.20 m away from the house
2) Calculate, to the nearest hundredth of a meter, the
15 min
vertical distance from the top of the ladder to the
ground
3) Let’s draw this out. What do we know? What ratio
should we use?

Topic
1) Calculate, to the nearest hundredth of a meter, the 10 min
2
length of the ladder
2) What ratio should we use?
3)

Topic 1) Keep in mind when solving angles in triangles you will

always shave two solutions. Angle a and angle 180-a.
so when solving, you will need to use the picture and
common sense (if possible) to figure out which angle it min
will be.
2)

Conclusion Time
 Discovery Activity?
 10 mins

Assessment
 Formative: asking questions and listening to answers and understanding.
