About This lesson

This lesson geometry guides students in exploring how to find angles and sides of triangles
using trigonometry. They will learn about the trigonometric ratios, They will apply what
they’ve learned to real-world scenarios.

Trigonometric Ratios: Sin, Cos, and Tan

In this lesson students will explore the relationship between angles and sides of right triangles.
They will learn how to name the different sides of a right triangle and learn about the sine,
cosine, and tangent ratios for angles between 0° to 90°. Students will practice setting up
equations with the trigonometric ratios to find the angles or sides of a right triangle. They will
make a inclinometer and apply the skills learned to find the height of a tree.

Solve a Right Triangle

In this lesson students will watch two videos to learn how to find an unknown side or unknown
angle of a right triangle using trigonometric ratios. They will practice with real-life word
problems and use a clinometer to find the height of an object in the school.

Lesson : The main trigonometrical ratios

Subtopic : Pythagorean Theorem
Theme : tree
Duration : 80 min.

Students should have a good grasp of transposing formulas and also be

Previous able to manipulate the function of a scientific calculator. Student
Knowledge: should also be able to identify the hypotenuse side of a right-angled
triangle
How do we use trigonometric ratios to find angles in a right-angled

triangle?
As a result of studying this topic, At the end of the lesson, 100% of the
students are expected to perform the following with at least a 75%
OBJECTIVES proficiency level:
• Explain the following terms:
(a) Trigonometric ratios
(b) Adjacent
(c) Opposite
(d) Natural sine/cosine/tangent
Skill
1. Name the sides of a right-angled triangle in relation to an
identified angle
2. Derive general trigonometric statements showing the
relationship between the angles and sides of the right-angled
triangle.
3. Determine the trigonometric ratios of given angles using
calculators.

FINDING THE HEIGHT OF A TREE
There are many ways to find the height of a
building or the height of a tree. Let's look at
a great trick we can use to measure height
of tall objects.

Label the sides of the triangles below with H(hypotenuse), O (opposite

side), and A (adjacent side).

Presentation of
1. Present the acronym SOH-CAH-TOA as a mnemonic device to
the Lesson
remember the trigonometric ratios.
Understanding
2. Break down the acronym and explain the meaning of each

discovery learning
3. SOH: Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse
strategy 4. CAH: Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse
5. TOA: Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent
6. Demonstrate how to apply each trigonometric ratio using the given
triangle and show step-by-step calculations.
7. Guide students through several practice examples, gradually
increasing in difficulty.
8. Encourage students to ask questions and provide clarification as
needed.

THE SINE RATIO

1) Are the triangles A, B and C similar?

2) Are the three angles marked in triangles A, B and C the same?

As triangles A, B and C are similar triangles, the ratios of

the opposite sides to the hypotenses are also the same
among the three right triangles.
In fact, for all right triangles having the same acute angle 𝜃, the
ratios of the opposite sides to the hypotenses are the same. This
ratio is known as the sine ratio of angle & and is denoted by sin 𝜃.
9. Distribute worksheets or handouts containing a variety of
trigonometry problems involving right triangles.
10.Instruct students to work individually or in pairs to solve the
problems.
11.Include a mix of problems that involve finding missing side lengths
or angle measures using trigonometric ratios.
12.Circulate among students, offering assistance and checking their
progress.
13.Conduct a class discussion to review the solutions and address any
common misconceptions.
Problem Solving
and Application Complete the trigonometric ratios with H (Hypotenuse), O(Opposite side),
(25 minutes) and A (Adjacent side).
