Steps in solving a problem involving triangle similarity and right triangles
20 minutes
Step 1
Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.

Step 2
Determine the formula to be used.

Step 3
Solve for the unknown in the given problem.

Step 4
State the final answer.

. What are the examples of solving a problem involving triangle similarity and
right triangles?

PROBLEM 1:

How long is the ladder which makes an angle of 30° with the side of the house and
whose foot is 204 cm away from the base of the house?

30°
x =? (Length of the ladder)

204 cm

Step 1: Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.

 Given: 30° angle of the triangle

 204 cm = away from the base of the house
Asked: length of the ladder

Step 2: Determine the formula to be used.

 Since the triangle is a 30° - 60° - 90°, we can consider that in getting the
hypotenuse, we can multiply the shorter leg by 2.

Step 3: Solve for the unknown in the given problem.

Hence:
h = 2 (shorter leg)
x = 2 (204 cm)
x = 405 cm

Step4: State the final answer.

Therefore, the length of the ladder is 405 cm.

PROBLEM 2:

Triangle FPJ and GMA are similar. The length of the sides of FPJ are 20 cm, 25
cm, and 12 cm. The length of the longest side of GMA is 200 cm, what is the
perimeter of GMA?

cm

Step 1: Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.

 Given: The length of the sides of FPJ are 20 cm, 25 cm, and 12 cm
The length of the longest side of GMA is 200 cm

Asked: the perimeter of GMA

Step 2: Determine the formula to be used.

 Perimeter of a Triangle & Ratio and Proportion

Step 3: Solve for the unknown in the given problem.

for x: for y:
20 25 12 = 25
= y 200
X 200
25x 4000
= = 160 cm 25y 2400
25 25 =
25 25

y = 96 cm

For perimeter:

P = 160 cm + 200 cm + 96 cm
P = 456 cm

Step 4: State the final answer.

Therefore, the perimeter of GMA is 456 cm.

4.5 Application Direction: Solve the following problems.

1. How long is the ladder which makes an angle of 30° with the side of the house
and whose foot is 533.6 cm away from the base of the house?

30°
x (Length of the ladder)

533.6 cm

2. Triangle KYL and CBN are similar. The length of the sides of KYL are 14 cm,
21 cm, and 28 cm. The length of one of the shorter side of CBN is 10 cm, what
is the perimeter of CBN?

Expected answers:

1. Step 1: Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.

 Given: 30° angle of the triangle

 533.6 cm = away from the base of the house

Asked: length of the ladder

Step 2: Determine the formula to be used.

 Since the triangle is a 30° - 60° - 90°, we can consider that in getting the
hypotenuse, we can multiply the shorter leg by 2.

Step 3: Solve for the unknown in the given problem.

Hence:
h = 2 (shorter leg)
x = 2 (533.6 cm)
x = 1067.2 cm

2. Step 1: Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.

 Given: The length of the sides of KYL are 14 cm, 21 cm, and 28 cm
The length of one of the shorter side of CBN is 10 cm

Asked: the perimeter of CBN

Step 2: Determine the formula to be used.

 Perimeter of a Triangle & Ratio and Proportion

Step 3: Solve for the unknown in the given problem.

for x: for y:
14 21 14 = 28
= 10 y
10 x
14x 210
= = 15 cm 14y 280
14 14 =
14 14

y = 20 cm

For perimeter:

P = 10 cm + 15 cm + 20 cm
P = 45 cm

Step 4: State the final answer.

 Therefore, the perimeter of CBN is 45 cm.

4.6 Assessment Direction: Solve the following problems.
10 minutes Tests KNOW ME MORE
Directions: Solve the following using the steps in solving problems
involving triangle similarity and right triangles.

1. A 35-ft building casts a shadow that is 10ft long at the same time, a
nearby tree casts a shadow that is 5ft long. How tall is the tree?

2. A triangle with side lengths 5 cm, 11 cm, and 15 cm is similar to another

triangle with the shortest side of length is 8 cm. Find the perimeter of the
larger triangle.

Expected answers:

1. Use the proportion:

Height of the building = Shadow of the building

Height of the tree Shadow of the tree

35 = 10
x 5
10x = 35 (5)
10 x = 175
10 10
x = 17.5

Therefore, the length of the tree is 17.5 feet

2. Use the proportion:

5 = 11 = 15
8 x y Solve for y:
5 = 11
Solve for x: 8 y
5 = 11 5x = 15(8)
8 x 5x = 120
5x = 11(8 5 5
5x = 88 X = 24 P = side + side + side
5 5 P = 8 + 17.6 + 24
X = 88/5 or 17.6 P = 49.6 cm

Therefore, the perimeter of the triangle is 49.6 cm.
