20 minutes
Step 1
Identify the given information and illustrate the problem.
Step 2
Determine the formula to be used.
Step 3
Solve for the unknown in the given problem.
Step 4
State the final answer.
. What are the examples of solving a problem involving triangle similarity and
right triangles?
PROBLEM 1:
How long is the ladder which makes an angle of 30° with the side of the house and
whose foot is 204 cm away from the base of the house?
30°
x =? (Length of the ladder)
204 cm
Since the triangle is a 30° - 60° - 90°, we can consider that in getting the
hypotenuse, we can multiply the shorter leg by 2.
Hence:
h = 2 (shorter leg)
x = 2 (204 cm)
x = 405 cm
PROBLEM 2:
Triangle FPJ and GMA are similar. The length of the sides of FPJ are 20 cm, 25
cm, and 12 cm. The length of the longest side of GMA is 200 cm, what is the
perimeter of GMA?
M

F G A
12 y
cm
Given: The length of the sides of FPJ are 20 cm, 25 cm, and 12 cm
The length of the longest side of GMA is 200 cm
for x: for y:
20 25 12 = 25
= y 200
X 200
25x 4000

25 25 =
25 25
y = 96 cm
For perimeter:
P = 160 cm + 200 cm + 96 cm
P = 456 cm
30°
x (Length of the ladder)

533.6 cm
2. Triangle KYL and CBN are similar. The length of the sides of KYL are 14 cm,
21 cm, and 28 cm. The length of one of the shorter side of CBN is 10 cm, what
is the perimeter of CBN?
B

K C N
28 y

Expected answers:
Since the triangle is a 30° - 60° - 90°, we can consider that in getting the
hypotenuse, we can multiply the shorter leg by 2.
Hence:
h = 2 (shorter leg)
x = 2 (533.6 cm)
x = 1067.2 cm
Given: The length of the sides of KYL are 14 cm, 21 cm, and 28 cm
The length of one of the shorter side of CBN is 10 cm
for x: for y:
14 21 14 = 28
= 10 y
10 x
14x 210
= = 15 cm 14y 280
14 14 =
14 14
y = 20 cm
For perimeter:
P = 10 cm + 15 cm + 20 cm
P = 45 cm

Directions: Solve the following using the steps in solving problems
involving triangle similarity and right triangles.
1. A 35-ft building casts a shadow that is 10ft long at the same time, a
nearby tree casts a shadow that is 5ft long. How tall is the tree?
Expected answers:
35 = 10
x 5
10x = 35 (5)
10 x = 175
10 10
x = 17.5
5 = 11 = 15
8 x y Solve for y:
5 = 11
Solve for x: 8 y
5 = 11 5x = 15(8)
8 x 5x = 120
5x = 11(8 5 5
5x = 88 X = 24 P = side + side + side
5 5 P = 8 + 17.6 + 24
X = 88/5 or 17.6 P = 49.6 cm
92 + b2 = 152
81 + b2 = 225
b2 = 144
b2 = √144
b = 12 ft.
