A Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Prepared by: Jarlyn R. Estoya

I. Objectives:
At the end of the session, the students will be able to:
1. Define the Pythagorean theorem
2. Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to solve the unknown side in a
right triangle.
3. Show enthusiasm on solving Pythagorean theorem
II. Subject Matter: Pythagorean Theorem
Materials: Cartolina, Pentel Pen, Glue, Scissor, Construction paper
Reference: Mathematics Learner’s material (pp. 389-392)

III. Procedure:
Teacher’s activity Students activity

A. Preparation
Teacher: Good morning class. Students: Good morning ma’am
Prayer
Everybody stand for the prayer (students prayer)
Teacher: You may now take your sits. Students: Thank you ma’am.
Checking of attendance
Miss Secretary is there anyone absent for Secretary: No ma’am.
today?
Motivation
Teacher: Before we start our new topic this
morning, let us have a short activity.
I have here a picture and a cross word
puzzle. All you have to do is to find a word
inside the table. A picture here is only a
hint for you to give an idea about the
words that you have found but you have to ( The students do the activity given by
know the name of this person. Now, I will the teacher)
give you 2 minutes to do the activity.

is our topic this morning?
Lesson Proper
Teacher: Very good. That’s correct! ( someone raising his/her hand)
Who can define Pythagorean
theorem in his/her own
understanding? Student: Pythagorean theorem
Teacher: Yes, miss beautiful. = The square of the
hypotenuse of a right triangle is equa
Teacher: Exactly, In addition to that. to the sum of the square of the legs.
Pythagorean theorem is a
relationship between the sides of
a right triangle. A right
is any triangle that has one right
internal angle.

Pythagoras is the proponent of

Pythagorean theorem. He also stated
that, in a right triangle, the square of the
hypotenuse is equal to the square of the
two legs. That statement implies.

c

2 2
c²= √ a +b
b²= √ c 2−a 2
a²= √ c 2−b 2
Let’s try some examples:

1. Given: a= 6, b= 8, c=?

a=6 c=?

b=8

solution: c²= a²+b²

c= √ a2 +b 2
c= √ 62 +82
c= √ 36+64
c= √ 100
c= 10
what if one leg is missing?
Ok, we also have a formula for that:
b²= √ c 2−a 2
a²= √ c 2−b 2

2. Given: a=9, b=?, c=15

b=? (One of the Student try to solve)

a=9 solution: b= √ c 2−a 2

c=15 = √ 152 +92
= √ 225−81
= √ 144
= 12
Teacher: who would like to try?

Teacher: very good! You got the correct (One student answer the last example)
answer. Ok, last example. solution: a= √ c 2−b 2
= √ 52−32
3. Given: a=?, b=3, c=5 = √ 25−9
= √ 16

Students: none ma’am

Teacher: who would volunteer to
answer?

Teacher: Very good. Ok class do you

have any questions about the
Pythagorean theorem that we
discussed?
Students: Yes, Ma’am
