A 54-year-old man with a history of chronic otitis media comes to the physician because of
gradually progressing hearing loss and discharge from the right ear. An MRl shows
evidence of a cholestea{oma in the middle ear. After diagnosis, surgery is performed to
remove the cholesteatoma. The surgery resulted in injury to a nerve that passes through
the middle ear cavity. Following the procedure, the patient notes significant improvement
