ASSIGNMENT
1. Define tincture based on USP.
- According to the USP, tinctures are defined as alcoholic or hydroalcoholic solutions
prepared from vegetable materials or from chemical substances. Made by extracting
the valuable principles from drugs by the use of appropriate menstrua or solvents.
Tinctures are made by percolation with few exceptions. Maceration or solution is
preferred when from its physical character the drug is not suitable for percolation.
2. What is the difference between tincture and extracts?
- The difference is in the liquid that is used. An extract might use any liquid such as
glycerin, vinegar, oil, or even water. A tincture is an extract that uses alcohol as a
liquid or solvent. Liquid extracts are more concentrated than tinctures. In other
words: all tinctures are extracts, but not all extracts are tinctures.
3. Why is it necessary to remove the rind of the lemon before maceration?
- Because only lemon peel is needed in this preparation. When fruit is macerated, it
softens and releases some of its flavors.
4. What is the principle behind maceration or process M?
- Maceration is the process by which organized tissue is transformed into a suspension
of intact cells, resulting in pulpy products used as a base material for pulpy juices and
nectars, as baby foods, and as ingredients for dairy products such as puddings and
yoghurts.
