FOUNDATION OF EDUCATION

Foundation is a base upon which any structure or system stands. A strong foundation makes the
structure or system firmly established and strong enough to be able to serve its purpose and to survive
calamitous events.

Education is the total social processes that bring a person into life in a culture. It is the process of
acquiring knowledge, habits, attitudes, skills, and abilities. It is the art of utilizing knowledge to make
humans more humane. It is the sharing of wisdom. The purpose of education is total human formation.
The school system is tasked to be the catalyst of educative process, which will bring about social,
cultural, intellectual, economic, moral-spiritual, and technological formation of students in order to
develop them into productive members of society. The schools are challenged to provide quality
education through an efficient, effective and logical education delivery system because society expects
the graduates to contribute to the attainment of society’s internal integration and external adaptation.
Education is also perceived as an investment of human capital. The stakeholders of education expect a
return of investments not only in terms of personal but societal benefits as well. The development of
human resources who think correctly and reason rightly that will mobilize industries, produce goods, and
services and that will serve as the manpower of the nation in achieving its goals is the benefit that the
stakeholders clamor for.

Foundation of Education are those systems or sciences upon which education stands and has its
roots, origins, or bases. These are education from which education arose and came into being. They are
the factors that affected education so much, particularly, curriculum content.

Outline of Foundation of Education

Psychology. It is the study of human behavior, of how person acts and reacts under different
situations, consciously or unconsciously, mentally, physiologically, physically, overtly or covertly. It is
the study of man’s reactions to life stimulations. Like any other science, Psychology is also based on the
observations and experiments which others can repeat and verify. Psychology concerns with observation
and explanations of human behavior in single individuals or in groups. Psychology as a science deals with
the motives, feelings, emotions, thoughts, actions of men and women.

Sociology. The word sociology was coined by Auguste Comte, French Philosopher in 1839. He is
considered as a father of Sociology. Sociology is the youngest of all the Social Sciences. The word
Sociology is derived from the Latin Word ‘Societus’ which means ‘society’ and the Greek word ‘logos’
means ‘science or study or advanced study’. Sociology is the study of society, the science of social life,
the study of social relationships, the study of human behavior in groups, the study of forms of social
relationships, the study of social action, and the study of social groups and social systems.

Anthropology. The scientific study of the origins of humans, how we have changed over the
years, and how we relate to each other, both within our own culture and with people from other cultures.
The term originates from two words in Greek, anthropos meaning “man” as in “human being” and logos
meaning “study”. Culture and society are intricately related. A culture consists of the “objects” of a
society, whereas a society consists of the people who share a common culture. When the terms culture
and society first acquired their current meanings, most people in the world worked and lived in small
groups in the same locale. Most anthropologists also believe that an evolution is the natural process by
which new and more complex organisms develop over time.

History. Some philosophers and thinkers wrote about what they called “poverty of history”. They
claimed that history is an utterly useless discipline because it cannot capture the past with certitude. The
word ‘history’ is derived from the Greek word historia which means “information” or an enquiry
designed to elicit the truth. History is the record of what one age finds worthy of note in another
Burckhardt History is an unending dialogue between the present and the past. History, in its broadest
sense, is everything that ever happened...history, in the usual acceptation of the term means history of
man. The materials to be studied are the traces left by his existence in the world, the present ideals,
present social customs and institutions, language, literature, material productions of human industry,
physical man himself, the physical remains of man, his thoughts, feelings and actions.

Philosophical. The word philosophy is derived from the Greek words philia (love) and sophia
(wisdom) and means “the love of wisdom.” Pythagoras was said to have been the first man to call himself
a philosopher; in fact, the world is indebted to him for the word philosopher. It is said that when Leon, the
tyrant of Philius, asked him of who he was, he said, “a Philosopher” and he likened the Philosopher to
spectators at ancient games. Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems, such as those
connected with existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind, and language. Philosophy is the rational
attempt to formulate, understand, and answer fundamental questions. Philosophy is a set of views or
beliefs about life and the universe, which are often held uncritically. We refer to this meaning as the
informal sense of philosophy or “having” a philosophy.

Legal Foundations. It is policy of the State to provide for a free and compulsory public
elementary education and a free public secondary education. Conformably, the following must be
observed: No Filipino student shall be refused admission; the right of any student to avail of free public
high school shall terminate if he fails for 2 consecutive school year in the majority of the academic
subjects. There are policies that protect the rights of students and promote and protect the rights of
students to enable them to participate actively and effectively in the democratic processes of effecting
progressive and developmental changes in society. The formal education system being the principal
institutional mechanism for imparting knowledge and developing skills shall be given priority attention
and support by the government. Education is a right and not a mere privilege.
