Introduction

The impact of the pandemic is visible in different aspects of life. It affects the
job people have to support themselves financially, the mental and physical health of
the people, and even causes the downfall of the system in the country. In early
January 2020, scientists identified a new infectious disease caused by a novel
coronavirus. Since then, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruptions
to schools and universities. According to UNESCO, as of April 10, 2020, more than
188 countries had implemented nationwide school and university closures, impacting
over 91% of the world’s student population (UNESCO n.d.). As the news for
community quarantine has been released, the world turns dark and everyone doesn’t
have their choice but to be stuck in their home and just wait for the financial
assistance given by the government.
The system of education is the one affected the most by the pandemic.
Different health protocols were implemented to ensure that everyone is in their safe
space. At the time where COVID-19 cases rises, school establishments were shut
down and didn’t allow to perform any certain operation that has to do with the
interaction of people. So, the education system doesn’t have a choice to continue
providing lessons for the students through virtual classes. During these school
closures, all face-to-face lessons were canceled, compelling many institutions,
including our own university, to immediately transition from face-to-face in-person
learning to completely online lessons. The abrupt switch to fully online learning has
been particularly stressful for many instructors and students who prefer in-person
instruction. Online learning is often stigmatized as a weaker option that provides a
lower quality education than in-person face-to-face learning (Hodges et al. 2020).
Although for some people, virtual class is an effective way to ensure the safety
of the people especially the students, various studies show that it affects the students
in a way of losing their focus and attention to the topic being discussed online thus,
resulting them to do unnecessary things while attending the online class. Numerous
distractions lead them to have no learning at the end of their virtual class. Students are
still in the process of adapting to the new normal education thus, it is a tough step for
them to avoid any distraction in their surroundings that might lose their focus on their
online studies. Home is not a decent place for you to learn, school establishments are.
