An E-Cig or a Cig?

In every city across the nation one can see an emergence of vape shops. There are also

new signs being posted prohibiting smoking, now including vaping in public areas. The question

whether vaping, the alternative type of smoking, is healthier has been roaming for some time

now. Vaping is healthier than smoking because E-cigarettes does not contain or has a lower level

of toxins when compared to smoking. However, vaping does propose some health problems but

has more advantages.

Smoking has more health risks than vaping. When smoking, combusted smoke enters

your lungs which includes several chemicals that have a strong connection with causing cancer

o.
and other health issues. Vaping takes away the need to combust anything which lessens or gets

rid of the harmful chemicals that cause these problems. When using an E-Cigarette, a liquid that

contains nicotine is vaporized, and inhaled. The E-Cigarette includes, vegetable glycerin,

propylene glycol, flavoring and does not always contain nicotine. However, the most common
vi y re

ingredient in cigarettes is tobacco which naturally consist of nicotine. According to Center for

Disease Control and Prevention, “Tobacco smoke contains more than 7,000 chemicals, including

hundreds that are toxic and about 70 that can cause cancer. (CDC, “Second Hand Smoke“)”.

“Scientists at UCL found that people who swapped smoking regular cigarettes for e-cigarettes...,
is

had much lower levels of toxic and cancer-causing substances in their body than people who
Th

continued to use conventional cigarettes. (UCL, “E-cigarettes”)” This shows that the risk for

cancer is less likely with vaping than smoking cigarettes because of the smaller amount of
sh

harmful substances in E-cigarettes. Also, there is no second-hand smoke, ash, or tar when

vaping. According to the National Cancer Institute, tar contains most of the cancer-causing and

other harmful chemicals found in tobacco smoke (NCI Dictionary of Cancer Terms, “Tobacco

tar”). This makes vaping healthier because in E-cigarettes there is no tar to stick to the lungs and

cause lung cancer like smoking does. Not only that but, E-cigarettes can help smokers quit

smoking.

Vaping does have some health effects but not bad enough to endanger your life which is

why smokers switch over from regular cigarettes. One effect from vaping is that it can cause

dehydration. “Because the primary substances that are used to make vaping e-liquid are

humectants  they absorb moisture from whatever environment they inhabit  vaping can dry

you out. (vaping360.com, “Vaping vs Smoking”)”. Smoking causes dehydration as well but

dehydration is not as life-threating as cancer. As mentioned before, E-cigarettes contain nicotine

o.
like cigarettes and nicotine comes with a range of effects. It can cause dizziness, a headache,

nausea, anxiety, etc. but, these things are only dangerous if a person is constantly vaping. Even

then, the worse result would be vomiting. Also, people can have allergies to the vegetable

glycerin and propylene glycol in E-Cigarettes but it is very rare. There is flavoring in them too in

which people can be allergic to. Still these effects are no worse than the effects from smoking.

Because people who smoke regularly know the toxic effects of smoking, E-cigarettes become a

better option for them. “A new study found by British researchers suggests that E-cigarettes can

help people stop smoking” (webmd.com, “Can E-cigs Help You Quit”)”. “The study found that
is

people who wanted to quit smoking were about 60 percent more likely to succeed if they used E-

cigarettes compared to would-be quitters who tried an anti-smoking nicotine patch or gum
sh

(webmd.com, “Can E-cigs Help You Quit”)”. The more vape shops there are, the more smokers

revert to vape and the more smokers that quit, reduces the cancer, death, and second-hand smoke

rates. Data from a vaping website that uses sources from CDL shows that 8.2% out of 10%

smokers quit using vape while 4.8% of 10% smokers quit without vaping (vaping360.com,

“Vaping vs Smoking”). This shows a higher chance of smokes quitting using vape.

Vaping has more advantages than smoking also. More money is saved using E-cigarettes

over regular cigarettes. It is almost 80% cheaper to vape compared to traditional cigarettes

(vaping360.com, “Vaping vs Smoking). Cigarettes are disposable but E-Cigarettes are reusable

and refillable. There are over 7,000 flavors that you can buy for e-cigarettes. Even with these

flavors, E-cigs carries little to no odor, so there is a greater chance to use them in public areas

than cigarettes. E-cigarettes do not emit second hand smoke which is another reason why some

public places permit them. This makes them harmless to others and to decrease the levels of

co

nicotine that may harm your body, E-cigarettes have adjustable nicotine levels. Lastly, since

o.
vaping produces vapor, there is no flame that may burn if it gets in the wrong hands and there

are no ashes that has to be thrown away.

Overall, vaping is healthier and has more advantages than smoking which helps smokers

quit smoking.
