Learning Task 1.1.11 The Mechanism of the

Plate Tectonics

Use black color ink.

1. What are the viewpoints of Alfred Wegener on how continents were
moved and formed?

The theory of continental drift is most connected with the researcher Alfred
Wegener. In the mid twentieth century, Wegener distributed a paper clarifying
his hypothesis that the mainland landmasses were "drifting" across the Earth,
now and then driving through seas and into one another.

2. What accounts for the weakness of the Continental Drift Theory?

3. Compare the Continental Drift Theory and the Plate Tectonics Theory.

Continental drift was a theory that explained how continents shift position on
Earth's surface, while the plate tectonics theory states that the Earth's solid
outer crust, the lithosphere, is separated into plates that move over the
asthenosphere, the molten upper portion of the mantle. Oceanic and
continental plates come together, spread apart, and interact at boundaries all
over the planet.

4. In your opinion, which theory made a greater contribution to our

understanding of the world and its continents? Explain your answer.
