THESIS STUDY
The New Normal: The Challenges and Struggles faced by Instructors
in the New Mode of Teaching in the University of Mindanao, Davao
City”
INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study
A new normal is described as "a new kind of society, a new relationship with
the planet, and a new human experience." - Charles Eisenstein. Before the
occurrence of the pandemic, teachers and students are in a four-walled room. Inside
that room, they exchange ideas to mold each other's skills and gain knowledge, but
everything has changed as this pandemic occurred. When the new normal started, it
creates a new teaching model that results in challenging the educators
Furthermore, as the face-to-face classes pose a higher risk of spread, the
most viable solution is blended learning. This platform brought challenges both to the
teachers and the students as it occurs something new to them. This situation calls for
an 'adopt quickly' response to the new normal in teaching and learning amidst the
pandemic (Tanhueco-Tumapon, 2020).
Recently, schools' opening in the Commission on Higher Education and the
Department of Education in the Philippines has started last August. Some schools
use online learning, and others are in modular distance learning. However, there are
two critical problems identified by the educators and the students: internet access,
the curriculum, and instructional materials that need to be adapted to a blended
learning environment to use (Cacayan et al., 2020).
Hence, this study aims to identify the instructors' different challenges in the
new teaching mode, specifically in the University of Mindanao, Davao City. This study
can directly apply to the real world; for instance, instructors could learn and improve
their online teaching workflow by eliminating the challenges uncovered through this
research. This study will also explore ideas and understand the educators'
challenges, to know their strategies to cope with those challenges and their
recommendations to make this new mode of teaching successful.

CASE STUDY
CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE DUE TO UNTREATED
HYPERTENSION WITH ATRIAL FIBRILLATION
Heart failure (HF) is a clinical syndrome resulting from structural or functional cardiac
disorders that impair the ability of the ventricles to fill or eject blood. In the past, Heart
failure was often referred to as congestive heart failure (CHF), because many patients
experience pulmonary or peripheral congestion with edema. Currently, Heart failure is
recognized as a clinical syndrome characterized by signs and symptoms of fluid overload
or inadequate tissue perfusion. Fluid overload and decreased tissue perfusion result when
the heart cannot generate cardiac output (CO) sufficient to meet the body’s demands for
oxygen and nutrients. The term heart failure indicates myocardial disease in which
impaired contraction of the heart (systolic dysfunction) or filling of the heart (diastolic
dysfunction) may cause pulmonary or systemic congestion. Some cases of Heart failure
are reversible, depending on the cause. Most often, Heart failure is a chronic, progressive
condition that is managed with lifestyle changes and medications to prevent episodes of
acute decompensated heart failure.
The body tries to compensate in different ways. The heart beats faster to take less
time for refilling after it contracts—but over the long run, less blood circulates, and the
extra effort can cause heart palpitations. The heart also enlarges a bit to make room for
the blood. The lungs fill with fluid, causing shortness of breath. The kidneys, when they don’t
receive enough blood, begin to retain water and sodium, which can lead to kidney failure.
With or without treatment, heart failure is often and typically progressive, meaning it
gradually gets worse. Hypertension remains a significant risk factor for development of
congestive heart failure CHF), with various mechanisms contributing to both systolic
and diastolic dysfunction. That's because the force pushing on the walls of the arteries
as blood moves through them is too strong. That pressure hurts the arteries and
makes tiny tears in them that can turn into scar tissue, which makes it easier for cholesterol,
fat, and other things to build up. That causes the vessels to narrow and stiffen.
