Project superwoman was started as a collaboration between a social service provider, a
non- profit employment training centre and a domestic violence shelter. The main aim of
the initiative was to help female abuse survivors in creating long-term, liveable wage
employment opportunities which would help them keep out pf poverty, public assistance
while providing stability and a feeling of independence. The project provided them with
proper training and support needed by them to enter and remain in workforce. The
survivors were encouraged to attend peer-to-peer counselling sessions. Women attended
training about expectations in the workplace and learnt non- traditional skills. The skills
acquired by them helped them land jobs in non-traditional areas of work for women like
carpentry, building management and plumbing etc. These were likely to pay liveable wages
and were unionized which provided a sense of job security. The program designers
identified 3 key goals for the survivors, that is they should attain coping skills, have
marketable skills in non-traditional jobs and they know and have appropriate workplace
behaviour.
Based on the availability of resources the group decided that they could provide assistance
to only some selective crises like housing evictions or any court appearances and couldn’t be
responsible for completely stabilizing the lives of all the people.
