Question 1

a) Define each of the following terms:


i) Pilot study
ii) Discrete quantitative data

b) A finance executive from FDR Company is interested in conducting a study to estimate the
monthly expenditure on transportation spent by the employees at FDR Company. This
company has approximately 2400 employees. Some of them work in the manufacturing
department, some in sales department and others in management and administration
department. Each employee in the firm was given a number and a sample of 400 employees
is selected as respondents.
i) State the population and the sample of the study.
ii) Identify the variable of interest for this study and state its type.
iii) What is the sampling method used? Describe how to carry out this sampling method.
iv) Name the most appropriate data collection method for the above study and give ONE (1)
advantage of this method.
Question 2

a) State the level data of measurement used in each of the following variable.

i) The colours of a rainbow.


ii) The number of cars at the car park.
iii) The ranking of the top 100 universities in the world.
iv) The temperature Kuala Lumpur for the past one week.

b) A survey on the workers’ satisfaction levels was carried out at Company X. The company has
24 branches with the same setting. A sample of 6 branches was selected at random. All
workers who work at these 6 branches were than selected for the study.

i) State the population of the study.


ii) State the sampling frame for the survey.
iii) State the variable for this study. What type of variable is it?
iv) Name the sampling technique used in the study.
v) Besides the sampling technique used in (iv), briefly explain how the sample of 6 branches.
vi) What is the most suitable data collection method to be used for the study? Give two
advantages of the suggested method.

Question 4

A marketing analyst is conducting a satisfaction survey on car purchase in Town A. The population
list includes 3000 Proton buyers, 2500 Honda buyers, 2500 Toyota buyers and 2000 Mazda
buyers. The analyst selects a sample of 400 car buyers.

a) State the population and the sampling frame for the study.
b) Identify the variable of interest.
c) State the appropriate sampling technique and give ONE (1) reason for using this technique.
d) Calculate the number of selected samples for each car manufacturer.
e) Determine a suitable method for data collection and give ONE (1) advantage of this method.
