MATER CARMELI SCHOOL

Differences in the abilities of the learners

Some of the students are advanced compared to those of their
classmates, while others are behind.

Students performing well and students who aren’t

Students arranged their intellectual thinking, the naughty ones
are seated at the back so the learners who are participative can
concentrate during discussion, and active learners are seated in
front.

I asked the teacher if one of her students is really active in the

class. That certain student is very active not only in class but in
performance task or extra-curricular activities too.

Pace in accomplishing tasks.

Learners are group accordingly by their abilities. Each group/row
has team leader or learner that can explain the task that the
teacher has given. That’s why there are no learners appeared to
be left out.

Teacher’s method in addressing needs of the learners

1. Did your observation match the information given by the teacher?
My observation matched the information given by the teacher because
they have been with their students and have already been familiarized
with their characteristics and behaviours inside and outside the
classroom.

2. Describe the differences in ability levels of the students in the class? What
practices or strategies are done or should be done to differentiate instruction
to meet the needs of the learners.
The differences in the ability levels of the learners in the class are
high, because each learner is different from one another. The strategy
which should be done to meet the needs of learners is to appropriate
the learning resources for each students learning ability.

3. Describe the methods used by the teacher in handling the students’

differences in abilities. How did the students respond to the teacher? Did the
teacher use differentiated instruction? If yes, describe.
The students responded to their teacher by how they should be. The
teacher discusses and when the learners don’t understand they are free
to asked questions. The teacher knows not all of her students are same
intellectual level, that’s why every group has a group leader that is
intellectually stands out.

1. Recall the time when you were in elementary or high school. Recall the high
and low achievers in your class. How did your teacher deal with differences
in abilities? Was your teacher effective?

I remember there are low achievers during high school, in some subjects. As a result of
their low grades, they were given the option to enroll in remedial classes which was still
taught by the same teachers in hope of them to understand the lesson. By the end of the
remedial class, turns out very well as everyone in the class was able to pass the subject.

2. What dispositions and traits will you need as a future teacher to meet the
needs of the learners?
As a future teacher, the main disposition and trait that I needs is patience. It is a given
that as a teacher, I will be preparing lesson plans and such but in reality, these plans may
not always apply inside the classroom due to a number of factors. This said, patience is
key when teaching learners because they will not always act according to what you have
planned. In addition to this, it is important to be considerate as a teacher. Learners are
different regardless of ability. As a future teacher, I should not treat my classes as a one-
size fits all and adjust my teaching strategies and approaches where all my students
would be able to catch up and understand.
