Area of a Circle and Square – Homework

Remember, the area of a shape is the measure of the two-dimensional space it covers. The units
for a measurement of area will be square units, such as cm2 or m2.
There are a few area formulae you need to learn by heart.

Area of a rectangle = length × width

2
Area of a circle = π × (radius)

Occasionally, you will need to find the area of a composite shape - that is one made up of two or
more shapes.

For example,
The diagram shows a square with a semicircle along one edge. Work out the combined area of
the two shapes.

6cm

The area of the square is 6 × 6 = 36cm2

The area of the semicircle is

π × 32 = 9π = 4.5πcm2
2 2

The total area is the sum of these: 36 + 4.5π = 50.1cm2 (correct to 1 decimal place).

Your Turn
1. Calculate the area of each shape. Where necessary, give your answer correct to 3 significant
figures.
