Course Title: Highway Design and Railways

Course Code: CE 1002
1. Introduction of the course
2. Objective of the course
3. Applications of the course
4. Answer the following questions
a. Write short notes on (i) Free board and (ii) Stage construction.
b. Design flexible pavement layers of regional highway using following information.
Pressure ADT = 1200, Growth rate = 8%, Construction period = 3 years, CBR of
natural sub grade = 4%, CBR of improved sub grade = 8%, CBR of sub base = 25%,
CBR of base = 50% and CBR of wearing surface = 90%.
c. A flexible pavement is to be designed for a rural interstate highway to carry a
design ESAL of 3×106. It is estimated that the sub-base for the pavement structure
will be exposed to moisture level approaching saturation approximately 5% of the
time and the overall quality of the drainage is fair. The base will be exposed to
saturation level moisture approximately 10% of the time. The following additional
information as available:
Resilient modulus of asphalt concrete at 680F = 420000 psi (a1 =0.42)
The granular base CBR = 70 and MR = 24000 (a2 =0.13)
An untreated granular sub-base has a CBR = 9 and MR = 10000 (a3 =0.075)
The sub-grade has a CBR = 1 and MR = 1500
Reliability level = 85%, Standard deviation = 0.45, Serviceability loss = 2%
Design the pavement by AASTHO method.
d. Calculate the stress at interior, end and corner region of concrete pavement using
stress equation developed by water guard. Use following data-
Wheel load, P = 5100 kg.
Modulus of elasticity, Ec = 3×105 kg/cm2.
Poisons ratio, 𝝁 = 0.15
Pavement thickness, h = 18 cm.
Modulus of subgrade, k = 6 kg/ cm3 and Area, a = 15 cm2.
e. Define Cant deficiency. Describe supper elevation with neat sketch.
f. What should be the equilibrium cant on a M.G. Railway track having curvature of five
degrees for an average speed of 65 km/h? Also, find out the maximum permissible
speed after allowing the maximum cant deficiency.

5. Conclusion
