READING EXPLORER 9B

THE ULTIMATE TRIP

During the early days of space exploration, motivation for venturing into space

came from competition. The cold war between the Soviet Union and the United

States grew extremely tense, and with pressure and competition comes the desire

to be victorious. Therefore, the race to get to space commenced, with both sides

finding success. This urged both the east and the west to invest on developing

space travel technology.

In the modern times, space travel is mainly profit-driven, with companies such as
Amazon and SpaceX planning for the future of commercial space tourism and
colony on mars. The creation of space companies can be seen as the “renaissance”
for space development. After almost 50 years of lack of space projects by
government agencies, private companies are competing for space technology
once again. However, since they are profit driven, it would be dangerous if they
hold too much power over the future civilization. Currently, there are only very
few space travel companies, and in the future when outer-space colonization
becomes an important aspect of human life, these companies might hold power
that reins over world governments. The profit-driven nature of these companies
might suggest an dystopian future. (Words: 195)
