Detail Description of Innovation

The Virtual Inheritance Comic (Komik Pewarisan Maya) is developed as an online

product that can be accessed through a link or QR code. The design of Virtual

Inheritance Comic is based on the needs of form 5 students where the content

contained in the comic is designed to follow KSSM (Kurikulum Bersepadu Sekolah

Menengah) based on DSKP (Dokumen Standard Kurikulum dan Pentaksiran) of form

4 and 5 Biology which was published in 2018. Referring on a survey done by

developer, most prospective Biology teachers in UPSI are in need of a teaching aid

(BBM) for explaining Dihybrid Inheritance content standard in their teaching and

facilitation (PdPc) soon. Thus, the developer has design the storyline by applying the

Dihybrid Inheritance to the maximum.

Interestingly, all the contents in this product are loaded through a different

storytelling path in compared with the textbook, where it comes in virtual form and

contains comic strips. The storyline of the comic strips is designed starting with the

character of a father named Nestler who recalls the Monohibrid Inheritance to his

child, Omar who expressed a question related to the Inheritance. Next, there is a

character that is described as the Father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel who tells his own

story about the Dihybrid Inheritance that he has founded as soon as he discovered the

Monohibrid Inheritance. Interestingly, this comic is designed according to the

situation that makes it easier for students to rationalize the storyline where the time

setting is depicted to be in the 1970s era. It was during this era that Gregor Mendel

actively introduced discovery after discovery related to Inheritance.

Presented in Malay Language version, Virtual Inheritance Comic in total

consists of 36 pages excluding the front page. The 36 pages consist of an introduction
to the characters in the comic strips followed by the comic strips and finally a

glossary section regarding the comparison of significant terms in the Inheritance topic

at the end of the comic. For the comic strips, students will go bit by bit on the

Dihybrid Inheritance content standard by exploring the learning journey of a naïve

kid, Omar accompanied by his father, Nestler towards the Father of Genetics, Gregor

Mendel.

The comic can first be accessed started from the class, where PdPc is

facilitated by the teacher. For this, developer has prepared a Malay version manual

specified in guiding Biology teachers or preparing prospective Biology teachers to

conduct PdPc using the Virtual Inheritance Comic. Within the manual, the RPH

(Rancangan Pengajaran Harian) development proposal was formulated using the

Bybee and Landes 5E Model introduced in 1990 which was based on constructivism

namely Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluation. Through the manual,

the developer has suggested the teachers and teachers-to-be to use this virtual comic

in 3 steps (Engage, Explore, and Explain) out of 5 steps (Engage, Explore, Explain,

Elaborate, and Evaluation) during PdPc session. After the class using this comic,

students are free to use the comic as a revision aid for Inheritance topic.
