PROCEDURE
Introduction (__min.):
Attention Grabber: Today is the final day of our football unit. We are going to be jumping into a different sport
tomorrow called rugby tomorrow so that you can get an intro into the workings of it!
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Students will use their knowledge of football currently to participate in game play
and drills. They will also be able to answer any questions posed to them that reviews content.
Expectations for Learning and Behavior: When you come to class you are expected to bring proper footwear and
clothing to participate in. The weather is getting colder so remember to bring extra layers if you feel that you will get
cold. The football unit does NOT deal with tackle football, and this behavior will not be tolerated. In class you are
expected to participate, so make sure that you bring me a doctor or parent note if you cannot. Respect your
classmates and help each other to get the most out of the unit.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: Students will be provided with verbal directions of the step-by-step route of the lesson.
These instructions are written on a cue card for the teacher to follow along with
Transition to Body:

1
Body (__min.):
Learning Activity #1: Warm-Up
● Students will complete one lap of the middle field before coming back in with a group of 4 to pass/punt
● instruct students to find space inside of the middle field to warm-up with their groups
● recruit a group to help set up the pylons and saucer cones to create 3 mini fields for the end of class

Assessments/Differentiation:
Learning Activity #3 Place Kicking:
● used for converts after touchdowns, for field goals and for kick-offs
● There are 2 styles:
○ American Style (straight on style)
■ step forward and kick off the toe with the ankle flexed and rigid
■ line up facing the target and take 3 steps backwards. When you move forward to kick the
ball you need to take 2 quick steps
○ Soccer (from an angle)
■ the approach is at a 45-degree angle and the kick is done with contact on the instep of the
foot (along the laces)
■ line up facing the target and take 2 steps back and then take 3 small shuffles to the side
for your starting position.
■ follow through with the toe pointing to the target after the kick
○ in both styles, you should be ending with a hop in front of where the ball has been kicked. (You
should land with your body ahead of where the ball is placed)
● Provide students with kicking tees to use when performing a kick
○ students have the option to have some hold their football in a place kick, however they are not
required to
○ the holder is in charge of getting the ball in position for the kicker and holding the ball during the
kick
○ Holder:
■ place your front knee on the ground pointed directly at the snapper
■ your back knee will be at a 90-degree angle directly to the sidelines
■ make sure the laces are up
● Students will get into groups of 4 or 5
○ half the students will be on one side while the other half are on the other side
○ students in each line will take turns making a kick to the person across from them
○ each group will require 2 kicking tees (one on each side of their group)
○ students may try to hold for a kick if they wish
Learning Activity #4 Mini Games:
● depending on number of students create 2 or 3 mini fields using the spray painted grid that has already
been marked out on the middle field - place pylons along the spray painted markings to help students to see
the boundary lines
● We are going to be getting into some mini games today. I am going to get you into teams and then please
gather around this field (specify which field on the day) so I can explain some basic rules before we get
going.
● Rules:
○ 5 downs
○ One hand touch (no tackle)
○ all aerial
○ everyone gets the opportunity to play QB (may use long snaps or self-huts
○ 10-1000 rush
○ kickoff is completed as a punt from the goal line
■ Complete: a receiver catches the ball and begins running
■ Incomplete: a receiver does not catch the ball and the play begins where it was dropped
○ A touchdown occurs when running the ball into the other teams endzone
■ a touchdown is worth 6 points
○ out of bounds is a turnover to the opposition who begins their first down
2
○ if a touchdown is scored, the ball is punted from the endzone
○ New Rules:
■ when a touchdown is scored the scoring team now has the opportunity to score a field
goal by place kicking it into the end zone (3 points)
■ the play starts with a place kick instead of a punt
■ kick occurs ~15 yards from the endzone
■ teams gather in enzones, if the defending team knocks the ball down before it crosses the
end zone then the convert is no points

Closure ( __min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Students will demonstrate the ability to perform a place kick and integrate
their previous learning from classes into game play.
Feedback From Students: Students will ask questions when they need clarification. Students will participate in game
play.
Feedback To Students: Provide students with encouragement and instruction where needed
Transition To Next Lesson: Next class we are going to be changing things up and looking into an introduction of
Rugby!
