Unit Plan

Grade 9 - Football

Subject Area Physical Education

Grade Level Grade 9
Topic Football
Length of Unit (days) 6 Days

Rationale
The aim of this unit is to help students to develop a basic, fundamental knowledge about the game of football and the skills involved. The students will
learn the rules, strategy and various skills of the game. Students will also work towards developing and honing key social skills and relations with their
peers. These skills will be developed through game-situations and working with peers. Other qualities that will be developed are sportspersonship,
teamwork, and positive attitudes. Students will be assessed on their participation and effort throughout the unit as well as their ability to perform specific
skills presented throughout the unit. Students will learn the skills of passing, catching, kicking, punting and basic rules and gameplay. The emphasis will
be placed on improving their skills by exercising correct technique. The tournament days at the end of the unit will provide an assessment of student
progression throughout.

Differentiation
This unit has been designed to develop/review basic fundamental skills in football. Each day works on a different skill and ends with a culminating
activity to help students to apply their knowledge in a game-like scenario. There are many ‘challenges’ within the unit to cater towards more advanced
players or students looking for a challenge. Adjustments will be made to fit the needs of all students and can be easily created if an injury, concern or
discomfort is presented by students. There are both competition and skill building elements that allow students to work in teams, partners and
individually.

Classroom Management
Students are expected to arrive on-time to class and changed into a gym strip if they choose to be (5 mins allotted time). Students are to sit in rows at the
beginning of class for attendance to be taken. Students are not to get out equipment or footballs unless instructed to or if ALL equipment is set up.
Students are to freeze after a countdown has occurred and the whistle has gone off. No students are to leave at the end of class until all equipment has
been put away.
