State the null hypothesis, the alternative hypothesis, the calculated value of the statistic, the
conditions under which would reject the null hypothesis, the decision statement, and the statement of
result.
Problem:
A professor investigates the relationship between the number of minutes needed to complete an
examination. Using the following data, determine whether there is a significant relationship between
time (in minutes) and examination score.

Number Time(minutes Examination x2 y2 XY

) Score (y)

Computations: Compute and have all the information you need to complete the six step statistical
inference process:

r =n ∑ xy−¿ ¿

10( 36,870)−( 465)( 806)

r= 2 2
√ [ 10(22,299)−(465) ] [ 10(66,310)−(806) ]

r =−0.637
Applications of the steps in Testing Statistical Hypothesis
1. State the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis based on your research question.

H 0 :r=0 There is a significant relationship between time (in minutes) and examination score.

H a :r >0 There is no significant relationship between time (in minutes) and examination score.

2. Set the alpha level. Alpha Level = 0.05

3. Calculate the value of the appropriate statistics using the Pearson’s Correlation formula. Also indicate
the degrees of freedom for the statistical test if necessary.

r =−0.637
df =N−2=10−2=8
4. Write the decision rule for rejecting the null hypothesis.

Reject H 0 if r (−.637 ) >.632

df=8 alpha=0.05

Accept H 0 ,r (−.637 )<.632

5. Write a summary statement based on the decision.
reject H 0 , p<0.05 , one−tailed
Note: Since our calculated value of r of -.637 is lesser than .632, we accept the null hypothesis.
6. Write a statement of results
There is a significant relationship between time (in minutes) and examination score.
