Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: The Foundations of Fractions

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 3rd grade math

Content Standard Addressed: MGSE3.NF.1 Understand a fraction 1 𝑏 as the quantity formed by 1 part when a
whole is partitioned into b equal parts (unit fraction); understand a fraction a b as the quantity formed by a
parts of size 1 𝑏 . For example, 3 4 means there are three 1 4 parts, so 3 4 = 1 4 + 1 4 + 1 4 .

Technology Standard Addressed: Communication and collaboration: Students use digital media and
environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning
and contribute to the learning of others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital environments
and media
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats

Selected Technology Tool: Genially

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☒ Analyzing ☒ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☐ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☒ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The children will be using the tool, Genially, to check their knowledge and understanding of fractions. They
will take an interactive quiz known as the dart quiz. The students will answer questions and for every question
they get right, they will gain a point as well as a dart. For every question they get wrong, they will lose a point
as well as a dart. They will be able to see how many bullseyes they received which represents their final
results. The students will love the competition of the quiz as they will be able to gain or lose darts, track how
many questions they got right, how many bullseyes they received, and can compare their results with their
classmates.

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will begin by answering the opening question of what is a fraction? Where have you seen
fractions before? This will allow me to see what they already know and what they do not know. I will tell them
what a fraction is, what fractions look like, the rules in order to be a fraction, and where to see them in the
world. The students will then get into stations. The stations include building fractions, showing what they look
like, working together on a worksheet, and working with a teacher. They will then check their knowledge and
take an interactive quiz on Genially. Based on their overall performance and results, I will provide a review

day. Lastly, they will take their math test which includes building fractions, showing what they look like, and
answering questions concerning the idea of what fractions mean.

Reflective Practice:
I feel as if the opening allows for them to activate their prior knowledge and to see what they know. The
stations allow for multiple learning needs and preferences to be met. They can-do hands-on activities such as
showing what fractions look like. They are able to have visuals through building fractions. The worksheet
allows them to work on their social skills and constructing explanations. Being able to work with the teacher
allows for them to get some guidance on the material and to see and hear what it is they are supposed to be
learning and doing. The interactive quiz on Genially allows for the students to think about what it is they have
learned and apply it to the quiz. They are able to check their overall knowledge on the topic. The competition
will also motivate them to take the quiz. The review day will help them get any clarification on what they may
be confused on or may need more work on. The assessment will go over everything they have learned so
there will not be any surprises. In the future, I would add tools such as Padlet for exit tickets or to answering
opening questions as they can see all of their classmates’ answers and their own answers will be anonymous.
