Possessive adjectives
- I have a new car , it is my car.

- He has a book , it is his book.

* A possessive adjective describes who owns something.


* We place the possessive adjective before the noun.
In English, we always put adjectives before nouns.
(my, his) are possessive adjectives.

1- (my) is the first person singular, I own the car.

In English, in total there are (7) possessive adjectives, I am going to teach you them in this lecture.

2- Hello Ali, is that your car?

(your) is the second person singular and plural. You own the car.

The car belongs to you.

It is your car.

Important

(you`re) is not a possessive adjective. I like you`re car. Wrong

I like your car. Right

(you`re) is the contracted form of ( you are) you`re a good student.

3- Ahmad has a new house, it is his house.

(his) is the third person singular. (male) He owns the house.

It is his house.

4- Fatima has a new watch, it is her watch.

(her) is the third person singular. (female) She owns the watch.

It is her watch.

5- Here is a house, its doors are white.

(its) is the third person singular. (neutral) The house has white doors.

It has white doors.

Its doors are white

We use (its) to describe characteristics of objects and animals.

Example: The dog is playing with its ball.

Note, if the animal is a family pet, we use (his, her)

Important
The possessive adjective (its) does not have an apostrophe.

(its and it`s) are pronounced the same but they are different.

(it`s) is the contracted form of (it is) or (it has).

(its) is the possessive adjective.

Examples:
- It`s a beautiful house. (it`s) here is the contracted form of (it is)

- It`s fallen on the floor. (it`s) here is the contacted form of (it has)

- It`s door is white. Wrong

- Its door is white. Right (its) here is a possessive adjective

6- We have a new car, it is our car.

(Our) is the first person plural. We own the car.

The car belongs to us.

It is our car.

7- They have a new computer, it is their computer.

(Their) is the third person plural. They own the computer

The computer belongs to them

Their computer is new

Important
(there) is not a possessive adjective.

(their, there) are pronounce the same, but they are different in writing and usage.

- I like there house. Wrong

- I like their house. Right

(There) is an adverb of place.

- There is a book here.

- I am going there tomorrow.
