As a future manager from the hospitality industry, what SKAV (skills, knowledge,
values, and attributes) do you need to possess?

Be guided with the following:

Position: Cruise Ship Hotel Manager

Skills:
As a cruise ship hotel manager, I should be able to have good communication
skills - a diverse knowledge about different languages or be able to communicate
fluently in English. Since I am working and serving different races, I should have a
warm and open personality. I should also possess interpersonal skills such as
flexibility, being a motivator for everyone in the organization, being an active listener,
and an effective leader. I should also be able to remain calm under pressure, have good
decision making, be creative and unique, have good organizational skills, and lastly be
able to train and discipline every staff in the organization.

Knowledge :
As a Cruise Ship Hotel Manager, I should know how to supervise hotel
departments onboard including housekeeping, galley, restaurants bars, and lounges.
Not just supervising the hotel departments but also directly supervising all employees in
these departments. I should also know how to monitor and counsel the work
performance of each employee throughout the year, conduct performance review and
annual written performance evaluations of staff. As a cruise ship hotel manager, I
should train my staff in all aspects of their job performance and oversees the training of
head chefs.
When it comes to Administration:
I should be able to verify, coordinate and oversee all ordering of hotel and
food-related purchases following ordering guidelines. I should know how to ensure all
hotel departments have necessary supplies on a timely basis and routinely monitors
stock on hand, manages all inventories for the hotel department, including Global
Market. Also on ensuring the accuracy and timely completion of the crew and guest
accounts from the bar, Global Market, and dining room prior to completion of the
voyage, including Hotel Manager Voyage Report. When it comes to the housekeeping
and food and beverage department I should ensure that the menu, quality of food
served, guest service, and cabin cleaning are in keeping with Company standards.

And when it comes to communication, I should know how tob maintain


communication with the corporate office through weekly reports or daily as necessary.
Communicates department projects for proper review and planning at shipyards. During
shipyard oversees hotel-related projects as required.

When it comes to Safety and Security, I should be able to keep up with them
as A member of the medical team. I should also have a background in different training
and participates in onboard safety training, meetings, and drills, as directed by the
Captain, including fire, abandon ship, man overboard, flooding, and medical
emergencies. Participates in shoreside training as required by the company. Familiar
with the ISM codes and requirements. Maintains familiarity with all duties under the
company Safety Management System and Emergency Station Billet duties.

Values and Attitudes:

To be a successful Cruise Ship Hotel Manager, you need to have the following work
values:
Since the hotel industry is all about meeting and greeting new people and
therefore you should be ready to show yourself to new people and welcome them with a
warm attitude. Being interactive is one way to achieve this. Second, as a hotel manager,
you need to have that inherent tendency to work with people and manage them. A
cruise ship is a multicultural industry, so as a manager, you should also embrace the
diverse community you are working with. You should also be punctual when you are
working as a Hotel Manager. You will have to keep a check on the time so that every
task gets done on time, and there are no delays n anything so that it doesn't affect your
clients and they enjoy everything to the fullest.

As a hotel manager, you need to be responsible and should take immediate


action in crisis or pressure situations. You cannot afford to wait for someone else to
decide that. In fact, you should be ready to face any such situation at all times and
should have a well-planned solution prior in place. That way only you can be extremely
good at your work.

You have to be a very good communicator as a hotel manager. Chances are that
if you communicate really well, the returns will flow soon too. No matter whom you are
communicating with, whether they are your staff members, your senior management, or
even your clients, you have to communicate your thoughts well and make your point
well. That way only you will be able to get things done and enjoy success in this
profession. But communicating isn’t what you only needed, you should also know how
to comprehend everything that is happening around you because communicating isn’t a
good thing when you don’t have a good comprehension

As a cruise ship general hotel manager, it’s important to understand that not
every issue or concern can be resolved and that a good manager is able to prioritize
what is most important. You should also know the value of your personal brand and
develop a global outlook. You should look after your people, care about your
employees, their careers, and their growth potential
In this industry, not everything will work but learn from them and move forward
quickly when something does go wrong or doesn’t go as expected

And lastly, stay true to yourself in the process: Don’t let fear of public opinion stop you
from doing what you know is best for the organization’s success.
