Tourism is an umbrella term.
Tourism includes travel, transport and
hospitality industry along with
many other sectors, as the following
slides will show.
Hospitality
Hospitableness is learnt through
culture at home, society and locality.
Hospitality originally started to assist
travellers.
People travel for many reasons; business,
pleasure, higher studies, medical
treatment, pilgrimage etc.
When they travel, they need food and
shelter. Hospitality industry fulfils that
need, for a return fee, of course!

Motor car
Automobile – Carl Benz, Duryea and
Studebaker Brothers
Travel before Invention of Wheel!
On foot, or on animals! People formed a
group (like caravan, कारवााँ) and
travelled through the day.
At nightfall, they needed a safe place to
protect them from wild animals and
bandits Their animals needed rest, too!
In all parts of the world such safe places
have existed, albeit under differing names.
Some examples are on the next slide..
Historically Hospitable People are...

The Hospitality Business in Old Times?
It was a husband-wife team that first began to run
hospitality business in primitive inns.
How hospitality has grown?
From a place in the stable (where horses live) to a
moderately clean hall\room;
sleeping on the floor to a comfortable bed;
from cook-your-own-meal to being served
wholesome, nutritious food,
this business has surely evolved over centuries to
become the marvellous hotels\resorts\motels\
casinos\cruise-liners that most of you are going
to make your career in.
It has been a truly fascinating journey...

Origin Of Word Tourism

• The term tourism seems to have

been derived from the Latin word
tornus, which means a compass like
tool for making circles or, a wheel in
motion.
• Circle denotes the circular journey
or trip.
Origin of the word ‘Transport’
The word is derived from the Latin words
‘trans’ meaning, across, and ‘portare’,
meaning, ‘to carry’.
From animals to carts, steam ships to steam
engines, cars to planes; travel has been an
integral part of tourism.
When more & more people can travel cheaply
and in comfort, more will be the growth in
tourism industry.
Space tourism is just round the corner!

Defining Tourism
Tourism is a temporary, short term movement of
people, to destinations outside the places,
where they normally live and work, and their
activities during their stay, at these
destinations, does not involve earning money,
including day visit & excursion i.e. trips lasting
less than 24 hours. (By Tourism Society of
Britain)

Tourism is a broad concept!
Tourism may be defined in terms of particular
activities, selected by choice, and undertaken
outside the home environment. Tourism may
or may not involve overnight stay away from
home. (A.I.E.S.T, 1981)
Tourism – The activity of temporary visitors,
staying at least 24 hours for leisure, business,
family or meeting.

What is TOURISM INDUSTRY?

Comprised of a broad range of businesses and
organizations that are related to virtually all the areas of
economy.
The components include all suppliers of goods and
services which the tourists require.
II. Tourism industrycomprises those organizations

• According to WTO ( World Tourism Organisation)
tourism is the movement of people away from their
place of residence and work, for a period notless
than 24 hours and not more than one year for
leisure, business and other purposes, not related to
the exercise of an activity remunerated from within
the place visited.
• Simply put, if you are working and getting paid, you
are not a tourist.

• Logically tourism can be defined as a stuctured

break from routine life & involves a separation from
everyday life that offers to transpose to another
moral and mental state.
