BALLROOM DANCE
DUCTION
INTRO
Ballroom dance is a set of partner
dances that can enjoyed both
socially and competitively. The term
'ballroom dancing' is derived from
the word ball, which originates
from the Latin word ballare,
which means 'to dance.'

It started around the late 18th and


early 19th centuries in England.
It became popular out of the working
and middle class throughout the late
19th to the early 20th centuries,
where they would attend social
gatherings and events in public dance
halls.

Ballroom dancing competitions started to


build up during the early 1920s. In 1924,
an organization called the Ballroom
Branch of the Imperial Society of
Teachers of Dancing formed. Its
objective was to standardize and
formalize ballroom dancing techniques,
sets of steps, and music as it's danced
too

It is a fun, light hearted


dance in which the couples
are expressing their delight
in each other’s company. Its
characteristics are cheeky,
lively and passionate.
RUMBA
It is one of the hardest dances for
beginner to master, but in the hands of a
professional, it is one of the sexiest
performances. Its characteristics are
erotic, sensual, passionate, tease and run.
Its elements are very slow, romantic,
flirtation and serious. Its origin are
ancient, going back to African ritual
dances that were transported to the New
world by the slaves trade. It surfaced in
its modern form in Cuba in the 1890’s.

SAMBA

It is derived from a bantu word which


means “to pray” while the dance and music
originated as a way of calling for the Gods
and inducing trance in worshippers. Its
characteristics are wild, lively and pleasure.
The steps Samba were modified during the
19th Century, transforming a wide range of
steps into a partner dance that began to
catch on in the USA and, by the 1920s in
Europe, further boosts to the samba’s
popularity come in the felines of Fred
Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the 1940s.
JIVE

It is obscure, some say it is based


on Seminole Indian dances. Its
characteristics are rhythmical,
gestural kicks and flicks. The origin
of Jive originated from steps
performed by African slaves in the
New world. By 1880s, a form of
Cha-cha-cha
PASO DOBLE

This dance comes directly from


Spain. It’s a stylized representation
of the half fight, with the man
paying the part of macho matador,
the woman standing in for the ball,
the cape, another matador or a
dancer. The Paso Doble is the
most dramatic and narrative, of
this dance first became popular
outside Spain during the 1930s
Competitive ballroom dancing, as
distinct from the leisure activity, has
been renamed throughout the world.
