Top File and Object Storage Solutions

Over 416,070 professionals have used IT Central Station research. Here are the top File and Object Storage vendors based on product
reviews, ratings, and comparisons. All reviews and ratings are from real users, validated by our triple authentication process.

Chart Key

Views Comparisons Reviews Words/Review Average Rating

Number of views Number of times compared Total number of reviews on Average words per review Average rating based on
to another product IT Central Station on IT Central Station reviews

Bar length

The total ranking of a product, represented by the bar length, is based on a weighted aggregate score. The score is calculated as follows:

For each of Reviews, Views, and Comparisons, the product with the highest count in each area gets a maximum 18 points.
Every other product gets assigned points based on its total in proportion to the #1 product in that area.
For example, if a product has 80% of the number of reviews compared to the product with the most reviews then the product's points for reviews
would be 18 * 80% = 14.4.

Both Average Rating and Words/Review are awarded on a fixed linear scale.
For Average Rating, the maximum score is 28 points awarded linearly between 6-10 (e.g. 6 or below=0 points; 7.5=10.5 points; 9.0=21 points;
10=28 points).
For Words/Review, the maximum score is 18 points awarded linearly between 0-900 words (e.g. 600 words = 12 points; 750 words = 15 points;
900 or more words = 18 points).
If a product has fewer than ten reviews, the point contribution for Average Rating and Words/Review is reduced:
1/3 reduction in points for products with 5-9 reviews, two-thirds reduction for products with fewer than five reviews.

Reviews that are more than 24 months old, as well as those written by resellers, are completely excluded from the ranking algorithm.

All products with 50+ points are designated as a Leader in their category.

VALUABLE FEATURES See more Valuable Features >>

The most valuable features include the ease of implementation, ease of use and the speed that you can do backup and recovery
on. It's not complex. Everything's included in the licensing. You pay for a terabyte of storage. You don't pay for it if you want to
upgrade to a bigger driver. Your support is set constantly in the Evergreen model. You also get free refreshes, etc. All of that in
Solution3f8e combination gives everybody an easier feeling of how they're going to go forward and what their known costs are further on down
the road with Purity. [Full Review]

Primarily, most of the features that we've used work out of the box. It's fairly simple if you just roll it out. We integrated it with our
kubernetes cluster fairly painlessly but, also the flip side of that is that's where the pain point is coming from because we need a bit
more control over it. That's been the frustrating aspect of it, but for the most part, it was plug and play. [Full Review]

The most valuable feature is its ease of use. We went from six different storage vendors down to one. The training for the
operations staff and others that had to deal with this on a provisioning standpoint was much easier to do. The process was
seamless and very easy to learn. It has absolutely simplified our storage because the dashboards on the consoles show a clear
Practiced5e understanding of where you are, and it is also very easy to provision. This been a big help for our teams. I am very happy with the

latency, availability, and reduction rates. [Full Review]

The most valuable feature for us would be that it's a good cost-benefit solution for storing large amounts of data compared to other
solutions in the market. [Full Review]

One customer we're working with in particular is using FlashBlade along with another solution called an object engine. They're
using that to revamp how they store their backups, then store them onsite. They can push stuff up to S3 and then archive into

This solution has improved how our organization functions in the way that it has essentially made us not have to think about
storage. That's probably the biggest selling point. Storage is boring and you don't want to think about it. From that point of view, it's
provided a lot of benefits. It ticks the big boxes. It's fast, it's scalable, it's essentially zero-touch maintenance. All of those get us

We have an improved the lifecycle of database testing and has improved QA in the space that we use it for. Storage has been
simplified for us in the way that it's easy to manage. Their automatic monitoring really helps when things break or are about to
break. They see a problem coming and alert us even before our own system does. It's good to have a good way to back up high-

In the realm of micro-services, I think that Pure Storage can do well if they start getting in there and making their arrays more micro-

I think if there's a way to make the flash array go wider that would be the better way to go in the long run. [Full Review]

On our dedupe during our initial buy, we were expecting a number a little higher like 4x. However, we are getting about 3.6. While it

In the licensing model, everything is included. You don't buy a separate license for Active Plus. Support is a separate line item.
Support is a different cost, but whatever your support is now, that's what you're going to pay forever. If your support's $100 today,
six years from now it's $100. It doesn't fluctuate unless you upgrade it, or change it, etc. [Full Review]

The biggest feature, the biggest reason we went with SwiftStack, rather than deploying our own model with OpenStack Swift, was
their deployment model. That was really the primary point in our purchase decision, back when we initially deployed. It took my
installation time from days to hours, for deployment in our environment, versus deploying OpenStack Swift ourselves, manually.
Jim Merritt Since then, there has been a lot of value-add that we've gotten out of it with the SwiftStack Gateway and ProxyFS, and the Metadata

The most valuable feature is its versatility. We use 1space and we can use it for almost anything: for our cloud service, for backups
of VMs. You can use it for almost anything. That's something we like very much. We have a storage policy where we have three
copies of the data. We migrate that data to another storage policy and we use the 1space feature for that. I very much doubt that the

The biggest impact, which really doesn't get noticed until you need it, is in our data protection environment. Up until we utilized

It has helped us with the ability to distribute data to different data centers. As part of our DR strategy, we have nodes automatically
replicating data from one data center to the other. This makes it easier for us to not have to shift tapes around or do anything else

When I started, SwiftStack was just a deployment model for OpenStack Swift. It did what it needed to do. There may have been
some room for refinement procedurally in how to do certain management tasks. Over the years with ProxyFS, I don't know where
the improvement would lie - whether it lies with SwiftStack or other vendors - but, in general, we need a model where more third-
Jim Merritt party companies support REST APIs, open REST APIs into object stores such as OpenStack Swift. I really don't see any great strides

On the controller features, there needs to be a bit more clean up of the user interface. There are a lot of options available on the
GUI which might be better organized or compartmentalized. There are times when you are going through the user interface and

The file access needs improvement. The NFS was rolled out as a single service. It needs to be fully integrated into the proxy in a
highly available fashion, like the regular proxy access is. I know it's on the roadmap. With some of the hierarchy, old management
storage policies, I would like to be able to move data between different types of storage policies. One of the things that has come

All in, with hardware and everything else - and I hate to say a dollar amount because it's been awhile since I computed it - I know I'm
under the $300 to $500 per terabyte mark. I call that my "all in" price, which has replications built in and protections built in. It's not
like you're spending that dollar amount on enterprise storage, and then you have to buy some software for replication, and buy

There is no vendor lock-in. The ongoing support and maintenance costs are not through the roof like some vendors, especially
those that specialize in backup appliances. So, they're very economical in regards to their ongoing support and maintenance. The
pricing and licensing are capacity-based, so it's hard to put my finger on them, because so many different vendors charge in
Scientif48eb different ways. We are still saving significantly over any of the other options that we evaluated because we can choose the best

The pricing model is great and makes sense. We have talked about how to get into more of a frequent billing cycle than once a
year. That would be an interesting concept to add into the product, having the ability to have monthly billing instead of having to do
a one-year licensing renewal. However, the way the license works by charging for storage consumed is definitely what makes them

What I like best about this product is that it is a complete solution, both hardware, and software, by the same vendor. There are
many object storage systems that are sold as a software solution, only. At the same time, some vendors only sell the hardware. With
this product, they are combined to make a complete solution. [Full Review]

I have no problems with our application, but we have concerns about the write performance. We would also like it to be easier to
scale out, to add more boxes to the system. And we want improved performance, to use a next-generation NFS service. [Full

Hitachi Content Platform See 3 reviews >>

Overview
Hitachi Content Platform is an object storage solution that enables IT organizations and cloud service providers to store, share,
sync, protect, preserve, analyze and retrieve file data from a single system. It is more efficient, easier to use, and capable of
handling much more data than traditional file storage solutions. HCP automates day-to-day IT operations like data protection and
readily evolves to changes in scale, scope, applications, storage, server and cloud technologies over the life of data. In IT
environements where data grows quickly or must live for years, decades or even indefinitely, these capabilities are invaluable.

The features that I have found most valuable are their retention logs. The other thing I have found most valuable is the way they
handle the BHEA. Basically the DNS and everything is managed by itself. It is seamless to the users. I think that some of the verticals
are things that come with the total package for the BHEA, multi-side BHEA, and everything. That's what I think is unique. [Full

The most valuable feature is the retention log. The way that they handle the DR is very good because when there is a failover, it is
seamless to the users. DR and multisite replication come together as a package. [Full Review]

In terms of what can be improved, normally they provide it as object storage, but they see that as a vendor they don't have the
components to glue it. So they allow all the partners to come up with all the ideas. But when positioning, if Hitachi could also come
up with their own sort of software to provide solutions, by OEM like Microsoft and all those, they would allow partners to promote
Mahesh their solutions to a partner store. Something like that. That's the way they should take this. Let's say from a partner point of view, we

The vendor needs to come up with their own integration solutions. As it is now, they provide object storage that is used by a
number of other vendors. They allow the partners to come up with the ideas. For example, Microsoft, Cisco, and others can promote
their own solutions, but there is nothing directly from Hitachi. Hitachi needs to start working with all of its partners, globally. What is
Mahesh lacking in this solution is a simple process to migrate from existing systems. [Full Review]
Wijenayaka

They should improve the user interface. It's a little bit complex. It does not have a self-learning method. You need to know how to
use it before you touch the system. The user interface is not self-explanatory. [Full Review]

If I had to choose a new aspect for the system, it would be the rebalancing. The ease of use during capacity upgrades would be the
most important improvement. I don't know if they manage it better right now or not, but it was really horrible to extend capacity on
Scality at the time that I used it. When you add new servers in the node or ring, Scality does rebalancing to split the workload across
reviewer124 all the nodes and servers. It moves the data from one server to another. [Full Review]
