Special 50th Birthday Celebrations


Events In 2011 Alexandra Park Library will be celebrating its 50th birthday.
Throughout the year, we will be presenting a series of exhibitions,
events, competitions, quizzes and talks relating to the 1960s
when the library was first opened, finishing in December with a
party for all on the exact anniversary of opening.

Meditation Group – A new monthly meditation group led by
local author and life coach Dave Robson
If you want to hear the still small voice of your heart, sooner or
later you must be still and silent, and listen… Learn the art of
witnessing through meditation, and bring greater balance and

Evening Talk – Library Architecture
Architecture critic and local Resident Stephen Games will be
presenting a stimulating evening talk in May. He says: ‘The role of
the public library is in crisis, with new technology destroying
traditional reading habits; and yet where new libraries are being
built, their architecture has never been more confident and
exciting. How do we explain this apparent contradiction?’
Stephen weighs up the evidence and arguments in a lusciously

Digital Photography Taster Session
As part of Adult Learners’ Week, we are offering a free taster
session for the budding digital photographer. You will need to
book your place, as space is limited.

Gardeners’ Question Time
Bring your gardening dilemmas to our panel of experts! The
session will be focusing especially on vegetables and fruit, but
other areas of interest will be welcome. If you have a question
relating to a problem plant, it will be helpful if you can bring a

Health Event
Drop in to our library for an hour or so to enjoy a nutritional
smoothie, take a grip test, monitor your own blood pressure,
collect a free pedometre, check your weight and then reward
yourself with a piece of cake!

Into the Heart of Borneo: A Powerpoint Presentation
You will visit Kuching, the capital of Sarawak; take a boat ride
down the mighty Rajang river; walk in the rain forests and
experience life in the long houses. Local resident Jill Gregory
will be presenting her pictures on screen, and leading a
discussion about this most interesting part of the world.

Unfolding Exercise is a collection of portraits resulting from
discussions about childhood memories and adult dreams of
exercise. Jennie Pedley, artist and physiotherapist worked
with Royal Brompton & Harefield Arts, hospital staff and
patients to develop this Wellcome Trust funded project
exploring our relationship with exercise.
