B, Kindergarten at FAES

Needs Discussed:
- Visual impairment
o Vision therapist discusses B’s needs in this area
 Specific suggestions include:
 Assistive technology – slant board to use in class
 Larger font for worksheets – at least 18 pt. (typically 20 pt. font
for K anyway)
 Preferential seating at front of room, close to point of instruction
 Desk placed away from window to avoid glare
- Speech impairment
o Speech therapist discusses B’s needs in this area (based on observations and
testing)
 Difficulty with articulation – slushy “s” particularly
 Must learn to develop complete responses – more than 2-3 words
 Given articulation goal for g, k, ch, sh
 SDI in small group setting – another K student from class who has
same articulation goal
- Academic needs
o Developed through testing with special education teacher and observations
shared by general education teacher
 Specific areas of need that cause difficulty in curriculum:
 Letter recognition, letter sound fluency
 Sight words from Pre-Primer word list
 Goals developed to meet these with 90% accuracy on 4 consecutive
sessions (30 sight words, 50 letter sounds)
o ESY to be determined based on need, special education teacher informs that she
will be collecting data to evaluate B’s ability to retain information
 B will receive test accommodations & small group instruction
- Parent Concern
o Discussed in relation to sight words
 Cause immense frustration at home, not seeing much progress
 Mom asked for a more engaging way to learn the sight words (just using
flashcards)
 General education teacher offers to send home materials for
outlining word with highlighter/using a game format
 Special education teacher gives idea of shaving cream for sensory
stimulus/engagement and enjoyment
 Mom appreciative of ideas, eager to continue supporting B at home
- Wrap-Up
o Special education teacher – determines itinerant support, 20 minutes per day for
reinforcement
o Virtual meeting – special education teacher sends electronic copy of IEP, NOREP,
and Medical Billing Consent Form to Mom for signatures
 Special education teacher explains the purpose of the NOREP signature
 Special education teacher explains the medical form is for the district to
get reimbursed for B’s services
