REQUIREMENTS AND PARAMETERS FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE DESIGN
PLATE FOR ME 158P-2: (READ AND STRICTLY TO BE FOLLOWED BY THE STUDENTS)

• The topic of the design plate to be researched, studied, designed and defended by the group
should be related to the following industry areas:
o Dairy o Processed Food o Marine
o Brewery o Pharmaceutical o Petrochemical
o Beverage o Automotive o Energy
• The title of the proposal should reflect the type of industrial/manufacturing plant with its plant
capacity and specified one of its utilities to be designed. Examples:
o The Design of an Industrial Steam System for 10000-Ton Raw Sugar Manufacturing
Plant
o The Design of the Utility Systems for Beer Manufacturing Plant
o The Design of Water Treatment Plant for use in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
o The Design of a Compressed Air System for Glass Bottle Manufacturing Plant
o The Design of Waste Water Treatment Plant for Dairy Product Plant
o The Design of Fire Pro and FDAS for Iron & Steel Manufacturing
• The group (composed of 6 to 7 students maximum) can choose from the following industrial /
manufacturing plants or the equivalent for their research and study. They should propose and
provide the design parameters / criteria / general manufacturing diagram for evaluation and
approval by his professor immediately after the first meeting. Once approved, the group should
proceed immediately to the detailed study and design. The group can also visit the plant and/or
of similar plant for data gathering.
o Glass Manufacturing o Industrial Food and Beverage Processing Plant
o Plastic Manufacturing o Iron and Steel Manufacturing
o Electronics Manufacturing o Sugar Manufacturing
o Lithography Plant o Cement Manufacturing
o Distillery Plant o Packaging Bottling or Canning Plant
o Car Assembly Plant o Gas & Oil Plant
• The common utilities (to select one at least) for the above plants are as follows:
o Refrigeration System o Carbon Dioxide Recovery System
o Steam System o Centralized Air Compressed System
o Drying System o Grain Handling and Storage Facility
o Water Treatment Plant o Air-Conditioned and Ventilation System
o Waste Water Treatment Plant o Fire Protection System & FDAS
o Compressed Air System o Electrical System (Substation & Power Center) *
*For Electrical Engineering

• The Typical General Industrial Diagram:

v
• Refer to IPE Design Notes (with Basic Manufacturing Diagram and Capacity Calculation).
• Submission of Executive Summary by each group consists of the following:
1. Proposed Title: _______________________________________
2. Abstract
3. Proposed Table of Content (See Executive Summary Format File)
4. Statement of the Design Problem, Introduction, Methodology, Discussion of Results,
Conclusion, Recommendation and References
5. Weekly Activities completed for Power Point Topics (Presentation)
• The Table of Contents (to indicate the corresponding page number) as follows: (For use as
guide only)
1. Title Page (See sample above)
2. Abstract
3. Statement of the Design Problem (This includes the detailed concept, parameters, plant
capacities, site location, economics, ethical & social aspects, safety, health & environment,
etc.)
4. Objectives of the Design (including the Economics, Ethical & social Aspects, Safety, Health
& Environment)
5. Significance of the Design (including the Economics, Ethical & social Aspects, Safety,
Health & Environment)
6. Scope and Limitation (Coverage of your design including the Economics, Ethical & social
Aspects, Safety, Health & Environment and Engineering Code to be used)
7. Review of Related Literature (Research Part)
7.1 Introduction
7.1.1 General Manufacturing Diagram
7.1.2 Brief Descriptions / Typical Process Flow Diagrams
8. Design Methodology
8.1. Plant Capacity Calculation / Operating Parameters & Specifications
8.2. Process Diagram / P&ID
8.3. Equipment Calculation/sizing & Selection (Mass & Energy Balance) / Pipe sizing
8.3.1 Calculation / Computation
8.3.2 Program Modeling (using any software code)
8.4. Prepare the List of Equipment selected & specifications / List of pipe size
8.4.1 Equipment
8.4.2 Pipes, valves and fitting Specifications

8.14. Manufacturing cost (Operating Cost + Depreciation Cost)
8.15. Viability/Economic (compare to market cost)
8.16 Ethical, Social and Environmental Aspect
8.17 Health & Safety / Hazard
8.18 Technical Brochures / Manuals
9. Result & Discussion
10. Conclusion & Recommendations
11. References
12. Appendix
• The Grade will be made-up of the following:
o 5% based in submission of Executive Summary (Students should be able to identify
the problem).
o 15% based in individual presentation/final defense (Student should be able to
formulate correct equation principles).

vi
o 10% based on overall group presentation and submission of the final hardbound report
and electronic files in USB, one week after the presentation (Students should be able
to solve engineering problems).
• Final Defense using powerpoint presentation to include the following:
o Maximum allowable time for the group presentation is 30 to 45 mins. The Professor will
ask question during or after the presentation.
o The student should make sure that there have a reliable WIFI during the
presentation to be able to have a clear video and audio during their presentation.
o The reporters should indicate SN before the Name (Zoom Class Meeting)
o The oral presentation should be concentrated mostly in the design.
Introduction/review of related literature should be discussed briefly.
o Prepare the grading sheet (see attached above sample) as provided to be used by the
Professor.
o Consider the use of proper size of fonts and its colors in the presentation. Especially its
background color should not be too dark or light. Avoid use of long paragraph. Use
tabulated form and discuss in your own words during the presentation.
Notes: The electronic files composed of Final Report (in word -.doc & in acrobat -.pdf), include
separate file if there is Program Model (using any software code) and Presentation
(power point – ppt & in acrobat – pdf form), should be submitted thru Course Messages.
