Why Political Dynasty Needs to Stop?

Political dynasty is a family of politicians who serve in one place or country and are
able to pass or extend government positions to kin for the purpose of expanding and
maintaining its hold on power and it’s common in the Philippines. Political dynasty
hinders our country’s economic growth and it’s needed to be stopped.
The government corruption is increasingly prevailing in our country because of the
over-dominance of political dynasty. In 2016, the ombudsman filed corruption charges
against former Vice-President Jejomar Binay and his son former Mayor Jejomar Binay,
Jr. regarding the Makati Parking case. The funds in the government are being corrupted
if only relative politicians are guarding it and because of the politicians whose willingly
to be blinded by the wrong doings of their relatives for their own good.
The poverty of many Filipinos are getting worse because the money is not being
distributed and, instead, it is in the hands of only few. According to the 2018 statistics,
16.6% of the population lived below the national poverty line, up 4.3% from 12.3% in
2017. Corruption caused by political dynasty, increases inequality through lower
economic growth that causes poverty and only favors the rich and well-connected people
by biased tax system.
Political dynasty threatens democracy and limiting the choices of the people of
leaders to be elected if there’s only one clan prevailing in the candidacy. In 2019, there’s
29% of all local elected posts associated with political dynasty, growing by about 1% or
170 positions per election period since 1988, a study by the Ateneo School of
Government showed. It reduces the number of potentially great leaders that can lead
better and have programs and advocacies that can help the Filipinos and the country’s
economic growth to thrive.
Our country’s economic growth isn’t progressing due to the political dynasty that
causes corruption, poverty, and lack of competent new leaders and it is needed to be
stopped now by suppressing government corruption and by electing independent
candidates.
