Flippy the Flowerpecker

Author: Garima Bhatia

Illustrator: Garima Bhatia
Flippy once came to a eucalyptus tree

2
"This looks like a fruit nice and juicy"

3
And so she tried to take a bite.... But it wasn't quite right...

4
Because it was a bud, not a fruit, silly!

5
Now Flippy was tiny but she was really very smart

6
To sip nectar she could use her beak like a dart

7
But oh no! She went overboard... and she poked and she poked....

8
Until the bud burst open and gave her a start!

9
Flowerpeckers are among the tiniest birds in India, measuring only around 8cm from beak to tail! The Pale-billed
Flowerpecker is one of this family, and is heard more often than seen, with its 'tik-tik-tik-tik' calls. Common in South
India, it loves the fruit of the Singapore Cherry tree! It squeezes the cherry with its beak, until the juice runs into its
mouth!

A BUSY DAY

I have so much to do. When I get up, I must see my mother. So I have to crawl to the kitchen.

2
Then I look for Chintu, my toy rabbit. He loves to hide-under the chair or on the sofa or in the cupboard. He
never thinks how difficult it is for me to search for him.

3
Then comes my brother, Rahul. He is usually getting ready for school.

4
I have to empty his bag to see that he has packed his pen and compass box and his water bottle. I try to
check if the bottle is tightly closed.

5
Then comes the hunt for my sister, Revati. There she is, fighting with the comb and mummy. What fun it is to
run my fingers through her hair.

6
If she is happy, she laughs with me. But if she is angry, she pushes me out of the room.

7
And at last I have the house to myself. I lie down on the sofa, look out at the sun and drink my milk. Really,
what would my family do without me?

I Am Not Afraid!

I am a big girl. I go out of the house alone.

2
It is so dark! Is someone there? Who is it?

3
Oh, it is only the cat. I am not afraid.

4
I can see a big dark thing outside! What is it?

5
Oh, it is only the well. I am not afraid.

6
And that sound! Creak creak creak! What is it?

7
Only my sister drawing water from the well! I am not afraid.

8
I hear footsteps! Who is it? Who is it?

9
It is my mother. She has come home from the fields.

10
I am a big girl now.

11
I am not afraid of anything!

What If?
Author: Hari Kumar Nair
Illustrator: Hari Kumar Nair
My name is Shyam, I am ten years old.
I am a little skinny, but very bold!
Waking up for school is no fun at all
I am so sleepy as I get up, I think I will fall.

2
My eyes close as I begin to brush,
I hear Amma making dosas in a rush.
My mind slowly begins to wander away,
And many, many ideas come into play.

3
What if my neck was ten times as long?
Half in school, half at home, where would I belong?

4
What if my legs were as tall as trees?
My school building would only come up to my knees!

5
What if my arms were strong enough?
Then, lifting Amma would not be tough!

6
What if there was nothing too hard for my teeth?
Think of all the things I could eat!

7
What if my belly was as round as could be?
All my friends could jump and bounce off me!

8
What if I had big and floppy ears?
I could hear everything, far and near!

9
What if — I begin, but Amma shouts,
“Shyam, you’ll be late, what are you thinking about?”

10
I find myself still standing with my brush in my hand,
And I smile and think of my secret little land.
