PRE-PRODUCTION STEPS

Seventeen possible steps to consider when approaching pre-production for a film.

1. Lock the Shooting Script (and perhaps copyright the script)

2. Creating a Production Budget

3. Form Production Company (not always applicable), and/or decide on production company
association or involvement and tier of authority or credit

4. Casting Lead Actors

5. Hire Key Department Heads

6. Break Down the Script (for production equipment and production design needs)

7. Create Shot List / (maybe storyboard)

8. Scout and Secure Locations

9. Create a Proposed Shooting Schedule

10. Secure Casting Other Supporting Actors/Roles, including the most minor supporting roles

11. Hire Remaining Crew

12. Script Meetings, Rehearsal with Actors

13. Meetings to Ensure Production Design and Art Department Needs are met

14. Get Permits and Insurance

15. Lock Down Shooting Schedule

16. Perform a Final Tech Scout

17. Arrange for Equipment Rentals
