 About First Catechism

First Catechism teaches basic Bible truths using 150 simple

questions and answers. Children can begin to memorize it
as they learn to talk. It’s also a wonderful way to introduce
the Christian faith to people of all ages. First Catechism adds
words to their vocabulary that reflect rich biblical truth and the
doctrines of grace.

First Catechism is an introduction to the Shorter Catechism,

which is part of the Westminster Standards. Catechizing—
systematic instruction using simple questions and answers—
is a tried and effective tool for spiritual nurture. Based on a
catechism published by Joseph P. Engels in 1840, this adaptation
prepares learners for later study of the Shorter Catechism.

First Catechism teaches people to know, love and serve God,

taking on a God-ward perspective toward themselves, God and
his creation. Our prayer is that the fruit will be a desire to fulfill
man’s chief end—“to glorify God and enjoy him forever.”
