REACTION PAPER: SK ILOILO PROVINCIAL FEDERATION - SANGGUNIANG KABATAAN BARANGAY SAN JOSE, TUBUNGAN

Amidst the threat of COVID 19, it did not hinder the SK officials of Brgy. San Jose in Iloilo to fight this pandemic by
educating children through their DAGYAW program or Delivery of Assistance and Guidance for the Young Mind’s
Advancement and Welfare. The main goal is to unite, help, and protect the youth against the virus. Led by the SK
councils, the program started by making disinfectants and distributing it to the residents. To further strengthen the
advocacy of the program, the SK council organized the “Kabataan Guro volunteer” to teach and educate children once a
week; not only the children but the parents were trained as well on what to do during this pandemic and the so-called
new normal. It is indeed very thoughtful of the youth to conduct such program and advocacy; knowing the risk they are
facing every day, they still choose to aid those who are unprivileged and most affected by this pandemic. Their
commitment to their positions and their burning passion for helping people is indeed admirable.
Amid the COVID-19 crisis, supporting our local communities is essential during these challenging times. As cities and
towns ask their residents to stay home to slow the virus’ spread, many of us are grappling with how to be there for each
other when we can’t be near each other. As a youth, one of the ways I can help my community in this pandemic is to
share legit news and information about the current situations. I could use social media as a platform to reach out to
those who are in need. It would also be helpful to share information and tips on how to avoid being infected by the
virus. But of course, the pandemic did not only affect our life in a superficial level, but it also took a toll on our mental
health, which is why it’s essential to reach out to our family and friends to give moral support and to let them know that
they are not alone.
Since quarantine started, people took fancies in planting and gardening as during their free time. My proposed
activity for my community would be “Plant & Donate”. Since the new normal started, people stay at home most of the
time and majority of our “plantitas” and “plantitos” would spend their time beautifying their garden. Instead of planting
regular flower-bearing plants or succulents, why not plant vegetables as well? Plant a home garden or expand existing
home garden to donate excess fresh food to your neighborhood. The harvested vegetables will be given to the
underprivileged residents of the barangay. They can also sell it and the profits can be used to buy masks and
disinfectants.
Among all of these ways to help our community, the best that I could do is to stay at home, always wash my hands
and practice proper hygiene, wear face shields and face masks when going out and follow the rules implemented by the
government. And let us not forget to pray for the safety of everyone, especially of our front liners who continue to risk
their lives to save and serve the people.
