SB 6A Unit 1 – Funny Reads Spontaneous Language

1. What is your favourite festival?

I like Mid-Autumn Festival best. I enjoy a great time with my family and relatives in
Victoria Park. That night, we have a reunion meal at home. After the meal, we admire
the gorgeous full moon and play with lanterns in the park. While playing, we have a
lot of food like star fruits, pomelos, mooncakes and so on. I am very excited about
this festival because we can play freely for the whole night.

2. Do you have any hobbies?

I like playing basketball since it is interesting and easy to play. I always play with my
friends and my family in the park or indoor sports centre when I am free. I feel relaxed
and delighted. Playing basketball helps me to stay healthy and fit. Also, I learn how
to cooperate with others and make more friends while playing badminton. Most
importantly, having a hobby can relieve my pressure after I study for long hours
every time.

3. What do you like to do with your family in the spare time?

In my spare time, I like going to the countryside with my family because of the fresh
air and the beautiful scenery there. We can have different kinds of outdoor activities,
for example, cycling in the cycle tracks, playing badminton, flying kites and fishing
in the pier. I feel warm and sweet when I enjoy the family time. Besides, I like to take
photos / selfies with my family to keep the happy moments. It gives me the giggles
every time I think of those amusing bits.

A. Janet is reading a descriptive account about a tsunami. Read the account carefully
and choose the best answer by blackening the circle for Questions 1 to 7 and
complete Questions 8 and 9.
It was nine o’clock and there were many families enjoying the morning sun at a beach
in Thailand. Suddenly, the ocean pulled back. The water along the shore was gone, leaving
behind small pools of water. There were many fish flipping and flopping on the muddy
ground. Everyone was fascinated to see such strange things. Children jumped into the newly
formed pools and played with the water.

But then we saw the wall of water out at the sea. At first, everyone was curious, but they
soon realized they had to walk away. They walked faster. Then, they started to run. Soon,
everyone started to scream. ‘Get up onto the roofs!’ someone shouted. People either climbed
onto the roofs of the taller houses or ran away from the beach, screaming madly. The water
filled up the beach very rapidly.

The second huge wave came, and this one was larger and fiercer. It was taller than ten
feet. It pushed everything towards the town. It pushed all of the 200 cars and hundreds of
motorbikes parked on the beach forward. Everything was pushed into the hotels and shops
along the beach. The windows and doors were broken. It pushed between the buildings,
washing out everything in the shops on the ground floor.

Finally, the second wave pulled back. Half of the objects fell onto the ground and half
flowed out to the sea with the water. Hundreds of people never made it home. They lost
their lives. I am one of the lucky ones.

Tom is reading an article written by Tammy about an earthquake she experienced. Read
the article. Choose the best answer by blackening the circle for Questions 1-6 and
complete Questions 7 and 8.
My Experience of An Earthquake
While I was daydreaming in the English lesson, I was shocked by a strange feeling. It
felt like someone was shaking my desk. ‘Everyone! Drop down, hide under the tables and
hold tight!’ Miss Chan, my class teacher, suddenly shouted nervously. It was not a dream! I
crawled under my desk quickly and held onto its legs.
After about sixty seconds, the shaking finally stopped. Miss Chan made sure no one
was hurt. Then, she gave us some instructions urgently to let us know what to do next. Within
a few minutes, my classmates and I grabbed our school bags and started to evacuate the
school campus. All of us covered our heads with school bags to protect ourselves from
possible falling objects. Although my classroom was on the fourth floor, I knew that taking
the lift was out of the question.
By the time we reached the ground floor, we wanted to stop and rest. However, Miss
Chan told us to keep walking until we entered the large open football field of the school. All
our schoolmates had gathered there. The field was far away from any buildings. Since the
windows and roofs might be damaged by the earthquake and could fall down, it was the only
way to avoid being hit by these falling objects.
I wish my parents were there with me! I looked around anxiously to see if I could sneak
away quietly. ‘No one should leave now. We must stay here!’ Miss Chan said firmly. My
heart sank. Luckily, Miss Chan noticed my fear. She patted my head to comfort me. It was
only until 11 p.m. that we were allowed to leave with our parents.
