THE ARTIST
An Artist is generally
defined as an art
practitioner such as a
painter, sculptor,
choreographer, dancer,
writer, poet, musician,
etc., who produces or
creates Indirectly-
Functional Arts.
THE ARTISAN
An Artisan is someone
who produces or creates
Directly-Functional Arts
such as an architect,
carpenter, carver,
plumber, blacksmith,
weaver, embroiderer,
seamstress/tailor, etc.
Why do we need the Artists
and the Artisans?
Artists and Artisans are the
pillars of human society.
Being an Artist and an Artisan
both require skills and
competence. We need them
because they are a way for
the preservation of our
culture’s dynamism and their
works are a way for our
society’s culture to be passed
on to the next generations.

“Medium” is originally a
Latin word, which means
“a middle ground.”

A medium is a way on how an

Artist or Artisan communicates
his/her idea.

Medium refers to the material

used by the Artist or Artisan. It is
the thing that objectifies the idea.

In accordance to medium,
the Arts are primarily
classified as Visual,
Auditory, and Combined.
Visual
Visual Arts are
those whose
mediums can
be seen and
which occupy
space.
Auditory
Auditory Arts
are those
whose mediums
are heard and
which are
expressed in
time.
Combined
Combined Arts
are those whose
mediums can be
both seen and
heard and which
exist in both
space and time.

Technique
Is the manner in
which the Artist or
Artisan controls his/
her medium to
achieve the
desired effect.

differ from one
another in
technique even if
they use the same
medium.

For example, a musician’s
technique is his/her ability
to make music sound the
way he/she wants it, and
two artists may sound
different even if they play
the same instrument or
play the same musical
composition.

The Production Process
The production process refers to
the phases required to
complete a certain production,
from the idea to the final master.
The process may be applied to
any type of production
including film, theatre, video,
television, and audio recording.
The stages in each medium
vary; for example, there is
obviously no storyboard in an
audio recording. However the
same general concepts work for
any medium.

Production
The Production Process

Pre-production is a fairly loose term which

refers to the tasks undertaken before
production begins. Exactly what is
included in this stage depends on the
medium and situation.
The Production Process
In music and theatre,
Production (a.k.a. “The
Point of No Return”)
usually refers to the
creative direction of a
project.
In film and video, production refers to the
part of the process in which footage is
recorded. This is what most people imagine
when they think of a film being made —
actors on sets, cameras rolling, etc.

Post-Production is the third and final major

phase of the production process.This may
include: final editing and reshoots (for videos
and films), Plotting of effects such as lighting
design and sound engineering, marketing,
documentation, copyrighting, distribution.
The Other People in the
Field of Arts
Museums and galleries
typically employ numbers
of Curators whose role is
to acquire, care for and
develop a collection.
They will also arrange
displays of collection and
loaned works and
interpret the collection in
order to inform, educate
and inspire the public.
The Other People in the
Field of Arts

The Arts Manager is

responsible for the day-
to-day running of an art
department. This could
be for an advertising
agency, an actual art
gallery, or a website
(among others).

Art Buyers find and purchase
artwork to suit the
distinguished taste of their
clients. If you are an Art
Buyer, you are well versed in
all types of art, techniques
and development
processes, keep up to date
on art theory and criticism,
and use this knowledge to
evaluate the quality and
worth of a piece of art within
an economic framework.
The Other People in the
Field of Arts
Art Dealers buy and sell works
of arts. He or she is the
middleman between the
artists and people or
institutions looking to acquire
work of arts: art collectors,
galleries or museums. Thanks
to their extensive knowledge
of art in general, art history
and their professional
experience, art dealers are
able to assess the market
value of work of arts and
anticipate market trends.

Collectors are literally that—
people who collect
artworks. Thanks to these

the arts, the art industry lives
