Artist
 A person who performs any of the creative arts.
This can range from painting to music.
 The specialty of an artist is that he is able to create
art for the sake of art itself without needing any
ulterior motives.
 It is believed that through art the artist can create a
change in society.
Artisan
a skilled worker who makes things by hand.
 An artisan is able to produce something that has a
functional value; although it should not be limited
to its use value alone.
 there are cases where the objects created by an
artisan has only decorative value.
 Most artisans have the skill of
adding aesthetic value to the objects that they
create.
Arts vs Crafts
 Art is a form of work that expresses emotions and
expressions. Craft is a form of work, which has a
physical form just like in moulding and carving.
 One can create duplicate craft forms, which is not
possible with art.
 Art is known to come out of the heart and soul.
Crafts are a product of the mind.
 Art is a product of an Artist while Craft is a
product of Artisan/Craftsman
Artisan and Guilds
 Guilds were a type of social fellowship, an
association that was structured with rules, customs,
rights, and responsibilities.
 A master artisan hires apprentices who will be
under his instruction resulting to a guild in creating
crafts.

 In the art world, the title of "curator" identifies a
person who selects and often interprets different
works of art, whether they be paintings, statues,
tapestries, or video art.
 Institutional Curators – affiliated with museums

 Independent/Freelance Curators – has a freedom to
move around various projects and platforms.
Buyers and Collectors
 Buyers are those who initially assess and survey
the artwork that collectors are interested in.
 Are those who acquire and purchase artworks for a
variety of reasons:
1. For scholarship and education opportunity
2. Appreciation of the Art
3. Safeguard and preserve them for posterity
4. For investment
5. To communicate a way of life/lifestyle
Art Dealers
 Are those whose direct hand is in the distribution
and circulation of the artworks through a variety of
means, such as direct sales, through galleries, and
auction houses.
 Have specialization in the art form, style, medium
or period, market trends, and even interrelation of
other key players in the art world.

Medium and Technique
 Medium can be concrete or tangible (paintings,
sculptures, monuments, and structures); or it may
be ephemeral or transient (sound recording, film,
or a performance)
 Technique of the artwork shows the level of
familiarity with the medium being manipulated.
