Artist vs.

Artisan
What is an artist?
An artist is a person who performs all
forms of creative arts. The specialty of an
artist is that he is able to create art for the
sake of art itself without needing any
ulterior motives.
It is believed that through art the artist
can create a change in society.
An artisan is a worker who practices a
trade or a craft. It is synonymous to craftsman.
An artisan organizes themselves into guilds,
and these became prevalent during the Middle
Ages.
Each guild had a specialization or trade, like
shoemakers, textiles, and glass workers,
carpenters, carvers, and weapon makers,
among others.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ARTIST VS. ARTISANS
• Artist and artisans articulate a vision through their art
or craft. Fine artists work with paint, watercolor, pen,
and ink, or illustrations, while artisans craft work like
jewelry, glasswork, pottery, or other functional
products.
• Artist focus on creating aesthetically pleasing works,
while artisans’ work focuses on accessorizing
functionality more than aesthetics.
• The work of artist tends to be shown in museum or
galleries, while artisans’ crafts are displayed in fairs,
shops and in malls.
ARTIST
Artist transfer their vision to canvas or other medium.

The job responsibilities of an artist include:

• Developing ideas for a canvas or product;
• Selecting a medium for a final work, including texture,
size, or area;
• Collecting work for a portfolio and
• Applying for grants for financial support.
ARTISAN
Artisans are craftsmen who make artistic products, such as
earrings, urns, and other accessories.
Artisans work to create something new, original and at
times, provocative. They spend a good portion of their time
selling and promoting their items in various marketplaces.

The job responsibilities of an artisan include:

• Using and mixing mediums like paint, metal, glass, or
fabric;
• Shaping, gluing, sewing, testing and producing products;
• Displaying work at various sites including auctions, craft
shows or online markets; and
The difference between an artist and the artisan is
expressed by this quote,

“For the artisan, craft is an end in itself. For the

artist, craft is the vehicle for expressing your vision.
Craft is the visible edge of art” (Bayles, 2020).
A medium is the material which the artist uses to
communicate and translate his feelings, ideas, or
thoughts.

A technique, on the other hand, refers to the manner in

which the artist controls his medium to achieve the
desired effect.

Medium is the mode of expression in which the concept,

idea, or message is conveyed.
A chosen medium must not be expected to yield the
same results. Giving two different artists the same exact
material and the general qualifier of “painting,” the end
product will still vary minimally or in an exponential
scale.

This is where technique comes in, as it is the reason

why art history is described by a seemingly limitless
example of works of art.
