Subject: Impacts of Improper dredging of waterways

To whom it may concern,

My name is James Roberts, and I am a professionally licensed Civil Environmental Engineer who works in
the geotechnical design of shipping and transportation water waysEnvironmental protection
department of our design company. It has come to my attention that you have continued to call for the
conventional methods of dredging water ways for several of our projects.made an insight into the re-
dredging of your water ways for future use and have been in contact with several contractors to
perform the work. While the dredging of water ways is essential to the safety of travel through these
passages, there are several negative outcomes that can occur from this conventional service that can
have severe impacts on the surrounding wildlife and ultimately, the health of your the coastlines
surrounding our projects.

The dredging of contaminated soils that have sedimented on the sea floor, can cause these harmful
particles to disperse into a larger area in the surrounding water. This not only changes the composition
of the sea floor makeup, which can have negative effects on many bottom feeders, but the kick up of
debris will cause an increase in the turbidity of the surrounding water, which can be deadly for many fish
and ocean mammals. This can result in drastic events of mass die offs in the surrounding area because if
just one species is affected, this can cause a domino effect in the food chain, thus leading to major issues
and potential lawsuits for the neglect of the environment. As a licensed Environmental Engineer, these
issues are severe and need to be taken into account before decided on the best method for dredging
water ways in our future projects. There are several eco-friendly solutions that I suggest before you
make your final choice. Please refer to the attached memo for further detail into the alternative
solutions. I ask that you take these recommendations seriously, as our conventional standards are no
longer meeting the EPA’s (Environmental Protection Agency) requirements for safe practices. This could
result in our company facing serious legal and financial repercussions in the future.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions about the subject. You can either stop
by my office on the third floor, email me or call me through the information given below.

Thank you for your time,
