Antipsychotic Medication

This medication can relieve and reduce the symptoms of psychosis-like hallucinating or

becoming delusional through false beliefs. Initially, this medication was referred to as

tranquilizers and neuroleptics as a class of medication used in treating an individual with

schizophrenia (Chokhawala & Stevens, 2020). In addition, the drug is used to treat people who

have psychosis conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, and bipolar disorder. Medical

experts can apply these drugs to help reduce moods in patients with bipolar disorder, reduce

Tourette syndrome, reduction o anxiety in people with depression, and reduce tics.

Suppose the symptoms of acute psychosis include confusion. In that case, this medication

can be used in clearing the confusion and making sure that the patient keeps calm within a few

hours or days, although it can take up to six weeks until they reach their full effectiveness in

these patients. The medications are used to control the symptoms related to psychosis, but they

do not fully cure the underlying condition (Chokhawala & Stevens, 2020). These medications

can be taken as tablets, injection or they can be given as syrup. The injections of this medication

are called the depot, and it is essential to those patients that struggle to take their medication.

As much as these drugs help fight the symptoms of psychosis, they present serious side

effects. Some of the side effects that can be experienced through the medication include; the

[patient can experience movements of the tongue, the jaw, and the lips that are uncontrollable,

which is also known as tardive dyskinesia (Chokhawala & Stevens, 2020). In addition, the

patient may experience problems with sex as the drug leads to hormonal changes. The drug poses

a high risk of a patient getting diabetes, sedations such as slowness, and weight gain. However,
not all these medications have side effects, because different people are affected in different

ways by different medications.
