WORKSHEET: Chapter 1

Task 1: List 5 qualities that a good teacher should have and give reasons for your choices.
Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why?
❶A good teacher should be kind and patient. Kindness is one of the key points for teaching
well, because it creates a mutual respect and it is necessary for motivating students for
studying well. Patience is required when you have weak or teen students or when you have
students with some physical disabilities but to be patient, does not mean to let students do
whatever they want to, because you need to have authority as to be able to control the class.
❷A good teacher should be lively and entertaining. When teachers want to share their
knowledge, it is better to bring entertainment and liveliness for avoiding to have a bored class.
In order not to have a monotonous class, try to move hands, change gesture, smile, …etc…
❸A good teacher is able to motivate learners. Tell the students why they are learning this, let
them know about the importance of the language. Say inspiring quotes to them, like it does
not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.
❹A good teacher has a good knowledge of his or her subject. Only establishing a good
relationship with students is not enough. we need to be knowledgeable enough for standing in
front of the class and teaching the subject. Actually we have to try to improve some aspects of
the job. Knowledge is very important. If a teacher loses his or her reputation for not having
enough knowledge for teaching or if s/he cannot answer the students’ questions, it takes ages
to gain that reputation back. So a teacher should not teach a higher level, unless s/he is able to
handle the class very well.
❺A good teacher should know students’ weaknesses and try to give them help and individual
attention where necessary. Individual attention is needed when you see that a student is a little
bit different. This difference can be emotional, may be related to motivation or can be a
confidence problem. The teacher can use implicit forms of correction like repeating a word and
introducing a book, or sometimes explicit forms are required as well.
*Personally I believe that, all the above qualities are important but it is very important that a
teacher be patient, interesting and knowledgeable. You need to be patience and have an
interesting teaching style and it is essential for teachers to have a strong grasp of the material
they are teaching. And have content mastery, since they would be more effective at helping
students to learn.
Task 2: State what you consider to be the five most important roles of a teacher. Describe each
role and say why you think it is important.

❶Manager or Controller: Where the teacher becomes the main resource of information, the
teacher manages all the activities like role play, group work and controlling that activities. The
teacher would normally be standing at the front of the class giving explanations, reading aloud
etc. S/he has to budget the time. How long should be devoted and how students are doing
that. Classroom management is crucial because it supports the proper accomplishment of
curriculum development.
❷Organizer: This role is one of the most important roles. organizing students in groups/pairs,
what to read, what to do, how much of the time should be devoted, … It is extremely important
that teachers are comfortable in this role, as chaos could be caused if students are not aware
of the task, or how the groups are supposed to function.
❸Assessor: evaluating and assessing students about their knowledge, giving score and
feedback and correction as well as evaluating and grading. Where they’ve gone wrong? What
they’ve done right and this is very important because learners want to know how they are
performing in the class. Assessment is a key element of learning because it helps students learn
and are able to see how they are doing in a class.
❹Tutor: Tutoring implies a more personal role for the teacher. when students are working
individually or in pairs in an activity and have a problem with the lesson, teacher should
explain that part, individually or to the group and s/he has to give equal attention to all
students. As tutoring gives students, the skills, they need to study and learn on their own when
they can’t do assignments.
❺Observer or Monitor: Often during the course of a lesson the teacher will wish to monitor
what is going on in the classroom. This can give the teacher information as to how long an
activity is likely to take and how successful it has been. And there are some activities in class, a
teacher doesn’t need to involve himself/herself with that actively. S/ he can just move around
the class, observe the students, and take notes and it gives the students more talk time and
allow the students to speak more and gives the teacher the opportunity to check on the
mistakes.
Task 3: List 5 qualities you would expect to find in a good learner. Which of these qualities do
you consider to be more important, and why?

❶A willingness to listen to the language:

❷ A desire to experiment with the language
❸A willingness to ask questions
❹ An acceptance of error correction
❺ A desire to learn
* I believe the more important part is the last part because a learner should have a desire to
learn first before he/she can become truly receptive of a new language.
Task 4: What are some of the major differences you would expect to find between adult and
young learners?
Learning experience: Adults want to have the same teaching methods which they had
experienced before. Meanwhile, young learners more are likely to have an open-minded
approach to new learning experiences and methods.
Motivation: Adult learners usually make their own decision to take part in classes that is why
they are quite motivated however, Young learners lack motivation
Nervousness: Adults are often more nervous about a new learning experience than younger
learners.
Language awareness: while adults usually want to be able to match new language to their
native language, Young learners are expected to absorb language from context and usage.
Behavior problems: Adults cause less behavior problems than younger learners due to the
greater attention span they have.
Life experience: It is a fact that adults have more life experience than youngers, that can make
the lessons more interesting.
Task 5: List the levels of language ability that learners are often grouped into and give a brief
summation of each level:

Beginners: From zero knowledge of English to a very basic knowledge of English which cannot
be quickly or easily activated.
Elementary: Students at this level are likely to be able to form basic sentence structures and
communicate on simple topics.
Low/pre-intermediate: Able to communicate and understand a greater variety of topics but
lacking general fluency and depth of language awareness. Still likely to make many errors even
with basic structures.
Intermediate: Able to understand and communicate on a wide range of issues using limited
vocabulary store but still lacking in accuracy and fluency.
Upper Intermediate: Should be able to actively communicate on almost all topics using a
greater range of language but still lacking in accuracy.
Advanced: Students should have a very good knowledge of the English language and now will
be studying more subtle language items.
Task 6: Give as many reasons as possible why students are motivated to study English. The
reasons that you give do not have to be in the unit reading material.

❶First of all, learning English gives people access to some of the world’s best universities.

❷Learning English gives us wider access to knowledge and is also the language of science. If
we learn English, we have access to the vast amount of knowledge available on the web.
❸English will open up more opportunities like emigration, …. and it increases our chances of
getting a good job in a multinational company within our home country or of finding work
abroad.

❹  English is the language of the media industry. If we speak English, we won't need to rely on
translations and subtitles anymore to enjoy our favorite books, songs, films and TV shows.

❺Skills like problem solving, dealing with abstract concepts, are increased when we study a
foreign language.

❻Foreign language study enhances listening skills and memory.
